Wow I bet my comp sci PHD room mate 100 bucks that 0.9999.. = 1

I actually like the sum of infinite geometric series better. The math there is clearer imo and indisputable.

I bet you $10 he will either
1. Try to weasel his way out of the bet with some crap like "you didn't say it was repeating infinitely"
2. Refuse to accept any evidence that you provide that shows that .999... == 1. See: thread on this forum

Yeah, some people just like to be smacked down over and over.

The fractions are what got me, too.

1/3 = .333...
2/3 = .666...
3/3 = .999...

3/3 = 1, so .999... = 1

However, I do not feel that it is fair to call someone stupid, GodlessAstronomer.

I don't think 1/3 actually equals .33333333333333333333333333.

Our base 10 system combined with decimal math is inadequate. 😛

You're right, it doesn't.

It equals .33...

Of course 1/3 = 0.33...
You only need to do the long division to see this. And yes, I think it's entirely fair to call someone stupid if they refuse to accept a simple mathematical proof.

There is nothing simple about proofs in general. I hate proofs. It just so happens that this one is on a low enough level that I can understand it.

You can't do anything precise with .33... or .99... Its easy to present it on paper, and say "see! it equals!", but its just conceptual.

I won't argue that .99... != 1, because obviously it does, because that is how mathematicians designed it. My argument is that .99... is not any more useful than infinity, therefore has no practical application.

1/3 of 12 = 4.

.33... of 12 = 3.99...

But who cares? Why use decimal notation in the first place. 😛 In fact, we should use a much more divisible base, such as 12 or 60...
