I got an E6600 running at 3Ghz. (old rig was an Opteron 165)

Video card has no impact on encoding speed.

Those results seem pretty accurate. When I had my E6300 clocked to 3 GHz it could 2-pass encode 24-minute XviD videos in around 8:30. We're both about a 3:1 ratio here. Now I'm at 3.2 GHz but haven't encoded stuff yet.

Right, I know the video card doesn't impact encoding speed. But since I can't wow myself with 3dmark scores or games for that matter, I figured I would try this.

Gah, I remember encoding on my 2.53ghz P4... times have changed :)

Awesome. I'm guessing you're talking about ripping DVD's??? Sorry, I know you said you're late to the party... I'm still trying to read the invitation.

Sounds like fun though because I'm a huge fan of avi movies. That's all I watch.

Heh, no I was talking about C2D.

I re-encode a lot of video files and the C2D has been a godsend.

I'd like to get a 4mb Conroe and see the difference from my 2mb chip.

Oh sorry. K, I gotcha.

But about the encoding/ripping... is it hard to do now-a-days? Or is it just, click...click... Start... 1 hour later come back and it's done.

You must be new to the scene because it used to take hours and hours to re-encode an entire movie. :p Instead of come back in an hour it was "get it started and come back in the morning and hope it was done". ;)

I used to have my encoder running for days at a time back when doing MPEG2 was the best you could do. I remember having my PC at 100% for something like a week while encoding some MPEG2 for a couple of DVDs I was authoring... funny how I seem to have stopped doing that AFTER I got faster CPUs.

I went ahead and upgraded my processor and mainboard from an overclocked Pentium D setup to the current one in my sig and I am also very happy with it. A very impressive performance improvement and much less heat and power draw as well. Not only that, but now my case has a slick Core 2 Duo inside sticker on it.

I didn't get a Core 2 Duo sticker in my CPU box :(.

Though I know what you mean all too well, I went from an A64 3000+ to this, and changed most of the rest of the components too. The jump to 2Gb RAM and a better graphics card as well has really completely changed what games are like for me.

Yes and no.

If you want to do it the right way, it's a lot more clicking.

Yeah, I guess it depends.

DVD Decrypter -> Auto GK -> Done. (90% of the time)
Just depends how much time you have, or what your use is. Might be considered "noobish", but I appreciate the convenience.

But encoding used to take 4 plus hours. (single threaded, divx, >2 ghz)

Neither did I. I have my Opteron Sticker on my case still. Anyway, I have an e6600 and a 680i board from eVGA. OC'd to 3.375 on air and idling currently at 38c. I have a Lian Li case with all the fans running so it vents pretty well. The processor is pretty amazing, though I haven't done much encoding/decoding.

For those of you who didn't get stickers: If you purchased retail, the sticker is stuck somewhere to the instruction manual. Look for it there.
