In a group, warriors and pallys are both some of the most intense and strategic play in the whole game, with the warrior having more options than a pally, and so a bit more interesting to me. Warrior playstyle changes completely when tanking vs. soloing, which makes it like playing two different characters:
solo = Kill before being killed DPS reigns supreme
group/instance = all that matters is you keeping aggro off the squishies, your DPS matters little, you enable more damage though causing additional threat than you do though using your damage dealing skills.

It's a total about face, which makes for pretty challenging and interesting play, its like two characters in one.

However, a paladin can play healer OR tank, and has numerous seals that can significantly alter his play style. They also have various buffs that they can choose between.

why are there no hunters allowed?
Like I said, this doesn't happen.

I agree, never seen that. The closest thing I've seen is "LFM for Uldaman" and when I inquire, they say they need a healer or tank.

Weird, I just saw that the other day...forget the instance but it was something like NO ROGUES, NO HUNTERS...

stupid people, Hunters deal more DPS than hunters. Hunter is very fun at times, but the fact that people reject them, makes it less fun.

What low level instances did you two see this for? Personally I wouldn't want to group with somebody that narrowminded and utterly wrong regardless of my class.

Correct, 99.999999999% of the time that people are putting that qualification in their "Looking for More" about no hunters or rogues is because they already have one in the group. Not because they are useless. they just don't want the added competition of rolling for items. I've seen the same thing with other classes and in groups I've been in with my hunter.

I don't mind playing with Hunters, but it is true, their pets can be a MAJOR nuisance.

Usually we need to tell Hunters to put away their pets, as far too often we group with a Hunter and his pets goes off and aggros a big mob and we get wiped.

My main char is a Paladin, and one other annoyance I have with is Hunters who constantly yell for me to heal their pet when I need to really take care of the rogue/warrior.

Sounds like you've grouped with a lot of clueless hunters, what level are you?

As a hunter I can say that my pet rarely "goes off and aggros" things. This has only happened when I have fogotten to dismiss the pet before jumping off a ledge. Maybe you mean hunters who put their pet on aggressive mode, which I have never seen or done myself with the exception of the stairs in zul.

I have also never encountered a hunter who asks explicitly for a pet heal. The closest is the cosmos petmonitor which auto sends a status warning about the pet being low on hit points.

The pet is quite useful, it just shouldn't be used as a primary tank.

The same goes for the Warlocks summons.

The voidwalker is a great tank solo, but in a group it blows. In groups, it is either the imp or the succubus. I generally have the succubus out as my friends seem obsessed with her ass and wait with baited breath for each ass smack...

^^^ what torpid pretty much said.

I use pet defender and pet monitor. If my pet gets low on health, it auto tells the group the current status of hitpoints for my pet at set intervals. However, I personally am the one healing my pet and don't expect others. I can use pet mend and heal well enough if needed. If my pet dies, so be it, better it then someone else in the group.

Hunters should almost always have their pet set to passive, or use an addon that allows the pet to defend a specific person, like the healer. A good hunter also ALWAYS remembers to get rid of their pet before jumping off a ledge. A bad hunter doesn't. Pets should NEVER cause added agro in ANY game, not just WoW. Crappy pet management is the sign of a crappy player for that class and that person needs to pick a new class to play.

Prefer the imp with my groups when i play my lock. Blood pact and he is ranged, therefore i cant get blamed for my pet pulling aggro from standersbye when he is attacking the same thing everyone else is.

I must admit that I am one of the people who used to jump without dismissing. This was mostly due to being new to instance runs where jumping was even possible. Also worth noting, I forgot dismiss existed entirely from level 10 to level 40 or so, due to never really needing it.

What is the add on that lets you defend specific people only? Is that the pet guard or whatever? I remember an add on but it would defend all members.

raufends pet defender, or something like that. You can type /pd all to defend anyone in the party or /pd <name> to defend a specific person in the party.

List of addons I use

Cosmos - Release version 1.570
Raunds Pet defender - latest version. (claims version mismatch with cosmos but just leave it and it works)
PetXPBar
SCT - (scrolling combat text)
FreeBagSlots (puts a number by my bags and lets me see how many available slots per bag or all bags)
PvPLog
LootLink

I think that is all the ones I use off the top of my head right now. got them all at the UI.worldofwarcraft.com website.. just do a search for "Wow Add ons" in google and you'll find it.

Hrmmm... I duno, I like being a hunter on a PvP server so far. I have some techniques I developed that make playing a hunter in pvp funnier then heck. The reason is because of freezing traps.

Freezing trap in pvp as a hunter is your best friend, not your pet. Lay one down everywhere you can. If you stop to shoot a monster in a pvp area, put a trap behind you. If you stop to loot/skin something put a trap on the carcass. Mining or gathering herbs? place trap behind you. Running down the road to a destination? place traps at intervals and keep track of where you last placed one.

The reason to use freezing trap everywhere and sop often is because I have "caught" sooo many people trying to gank me that it's not funny. I hear my trap go off, and can take a quick look at my opponent. If I can kill them I smoke them. If not, I have the option to toss on aspect of the cheetah and run like crazy if need be. I only die when huge groups of players come after me. Then again, no one really has a way to deal wtih a 5+ vs 1 situation either.

My only problem is mages turning me into a sheep right off the bat from a distance. That negates my "trap" and prevents me from targetting them to sick my pet on them. This is why I leave humanoid tracking up all the time and check my minimap all the time along with spinning my camera focus around. No mage can get close that way either. Glad I play as horde so I don't have to worry about tracking undead AND humaniod mages at the same time. I would be really screwed then.

Usually after freezing someone I think I can take, I back up some, tap aimshot, and send in my pet. Soon as my aim shot lands, my pet is there as well. I can quickly insta tap concussive shot and follow it up with a sting of my choice. If they run at me, I run away and "jump shoot" them with arcane shots, concussive, and stings and always stay at max range. If they stop to deal with my pet, I wail at them from max range. If they run away.... wait, you can't run from a hunter :) No one can, not even another hunter.

By staying at the absolute max range, I stay out of spell range as well for anyone else. If they can't cast spells on me then they can't do anything to me. If they can't hit me, they can't do anything to me. My only problem is running into random agro while I kite someone. Man that is the most annoying thing and only thing that tends to kill me.

I am two levels from putting talents points into improving my imp. When his damage is bumped and his casting speed doubled, I will have him out far more often.

Undead players show up as humanoids for tracking purposes. At least they do for me.

Well he'd have to do that insanely quickly in some cases. That 2-3 seconds spent casting eyes of the beast often times will result in aggroing all the people along the way, because it only takes ONE.

I assumed he would also click STAY first. Yeah, you don't want a pet running wild.

It's too bad warlocks can't do this, because jumping costs them a soulstone, unless they're using the imp. And if you're helping someone else somewhere that you can't generate stones, that can be an issue.

I played with my hunter for awhile... eventually, micromanaging my pet just got too annoying.
