I read an article on this somewhere today, but I can't find it anymore. I coulda swore it was on digg, or slashdot... but i can't find it anymore. It was something about a guild holding a portal hostage, and demanding gold for them to let people through. I don't play WoW, just curious.

Egh, probably in contested territory, if anything.
Otherwise, one side would have an advantage over the other.

It has been featured in various places, probably seen on Kotaku
An event going on in WoW atm is the opening of a new dungeon. This guild had the ability to open it and was holding the server ransom for 5000g
Turns out it was just a joke (check the Dethecus realm forums)

For those who actually play WoW: the guild had the scepter of shifting sands to ring the gong to open Ahn Quiraj and wasn't going to ring it until they got the money. No other guilds on the server had progressed far enough to be able to complete the scepter (especially the red portion which requires clearing BWL in <5 hrs) so they pretty much had a monopoly on opening it

I think what they are refering to is the AQ portal.

The newest instance blizzard has released has two giant time sinks attached to it. 1 Is a server wide effort pretty much taking the most hardcore of servers 2+ weeks to gather all the materials for. The other is one that will take a hardcore guild/faction several days-weeks to farm up for.

The first part gets handled on it's own basically. But the second part (the individual guild part) can be done by a guild (and usually only one or two guilds really put forth the crazy effort neccesary on a server - and beyond that only one person yields the 'scepter' to open the gates).

Hence one guild, who has completed the gate quest - if they are the only ones to have done it.. can literally prevent the server from opening the gates.
It's pretty selfish... and really funny at the same time too.

Neutral auction house. Simply put up a crap item for 5000g and the other party buys it (although it'd probably be more since it takes a 15% cut on all transactions)

Yeah, no one under 20 would play a lotr mmorpg. Anyways, you sound like someone who's never played the intensely addictive and unbelievably fun world that is Warcraft.

It's easy to see through their facade. For example, they share a horrible vernacular which contains such intellectual insults as 'ppl', 'cheep', or my personal hatred, 'rouge' (when referring to rogues).

Anyway, UO was a lot better at stuff like this. "Play Nice" barriers didn't exist, you could kill anyone and anything if you were stronger than them. People set up tolls at bridges and such all the time.

lot of adults play wow... only problem is those adults tend to let the game get the better of them and they act younger in game casue .. well they can..

most of my guild in wow is > 21.

Actually, a lot of the members of the guild that we do MC with (because ours isn't big enough yet) are married and have children.

There's quite a few adults in WoW, but like CVSiN said, some of them act like children because they can (and for fun).

yeah its a guild thatis asking for about 5000 gold from each of the major guilds to open the gates to the AQ as they are the only guild to complete the quest line.

Many have suggested others get together to complete their own sceptar or just wait for the gates to open themselves. which would be a few weeks.

I read about this on the WoW forums. Two realms so far are having the issue. One guild has done all the work to open the gates early, and they expect all the other players to pay them gold/items before they will open the gates.

The side-effect is that OTHER guilds now have more opportunity to try to open the gates on their own. Which also allows more time for other people to try to get the legendary mount.

Anyway, I find it interested, and rather funny.
