I know this is getting off topic....but yeah. UT2K4 does have a special DVD version, but I think it's more than twice the cost. It does include a microphone/headset thing (ooh, hardware, we're on topic again!! :) ) but that just doesn't justify the price difference, for me at least. I hope we don't get back to the days of "Insert installation disk #10" like back in the floppy days. :) I wish I could remember what game or app I used that had the largest amount of floppies back in the day.

I'm installing it now and it's a pain in the arse to load all these cds. People will pay hundreds to upgrade their video cards but won't spend $25 to get DVD drives?!

The demo runs smooth on my system at 1024 and medium settings. And it looks better than anything else, even on medium settings. I never use AA and have never seen the point (I'd jack up the resolution or special effects or whatever before wasting power on that).

Try Office 4.3; I think that came out to 26 disks.

I run at 1280x1024 with 2xAA and 2xAF with everything on high/very high except shadows, which I have on medium. I found that, on high, my minimum framerate would hit 18, rather than 25, so that seems to be a real hog.

I don't believe anybody can play this game with max settings @ 1260 x 1024 with any AA/AF.

Max settings for Far Cry already has AF maxed out, they just don't call it that. When you run 1280x1024 with everything at the highest setting in game and AA/AF set to app preference in the control panel you are using 16x AF w/trilinear on a R3x0 based board.

It was nice a sluggish for me on my computer at 1280x1024 w/ everything at very high with no AA/AF selected. Everytime I tried selecting AA/AF it would also corrupt the display, is this a problem with the Cat. 4.3 drivers?

Hm, software enabled AA/AF? I think im using cat 3.9 now. Not until they resolve random PC crashes running Zero Hour will I update. I had no problems running with AA/AF.

At either rate I found AA is pointless for this game at high res. Compare for yourself. Wall corners, railings.etc...I saw no jaggies on hi res. Must be because of the new bitmapping and how they smooth out the polygons which is what I also expect from D3 and Hl2. And AA killed my performance big time. Im now running it very smoothly with max detail @ 1280 x 960. I'm afraid to try 1280 x 1024.

Ya, I know they tested the game using the Cat 3.9 drivers, so that's probably the problem, and they will hopefully have a fix for it soon. I'm going to have to try running at 1280x960, maybe that will help.

I was playing@10x7 4xAA/AF medium settings on my 5800U and it was averaging 40+fps until I went in the caves on the 2nd demo. I walk in the cave and fps dipped to the teens and 20's during fire fights and it became nearly unplayable. I turned off AA/AF and it still bonked, is that the DX9 ps2 shader stuff being used that crushed my card in the caves?

All I know about the graphic engine is what I got from here:

Far Cry's Web Site

"The engine supports all video and hardware currently on the market, and new hardware support will be constantly added as it becomes available."--

A lot of new stuff going on, and I'm sure Nvidia and ATi are going to be working OT to optimize new drivers for such a game. Which I also can't wait to get my hands on.

This games fun, but when I am getting a$$ frame rates on brand new hardware, I have an issue with that. Hopefully the plethora of new stuff coming out will help to get FPS up on this sucker so I can actually enjoy playing it!

I enjoyed it and the very playable fps right upto the caves, I have a 9800pro coming so I will be interested in seeing if the 5800U's limitations are overcome because of the superior DX9 performance especially using AA/AF.

Looks like they may be adressing the issues my 5800U was having link It's a shame I won't get to test it and see if it was indeed a big boost :(

Ya, I was about to buy this game, but I won't until some of the issues are fixed and it becomes a little more playable...I mean Halo is a lot more playable than this!

You guys must have some problems or something...
1024x768 8xAF
MAX Detail
AMD XP2100+ @ 1.8~ 333Mhz
DRR2700 333Mhz
40GB Seagate 2MB 7200
4.2? Or lastest Cats...

Runs like a charm, no execissive lag for me. It does lag with I look at the walls with my flashlight on or their are LOTS (5+ explosion or 10 baddies on the screen at once). I'll look at my fps later...

Wow, I didn't have that many issues. And rest assure the 9800 doesn't perform exactly great @ hi res AA in this game. I had Low AA enabled and it was hardly playable. If I used 1024x768 like others, maybe. But then again I have to reiterate that AA does nothing for this game at high res.

I want to see some benches and comparisons from Anand ASAP! Mu ha :)
