Wow @ experience canceling XM service

Due to ever increasing commercials, censorship, and rates I decided to cancel my XM service this year.

I called 2 weeks before my cancellation date and scheduled for the service to be disconnected. They tried to talk me into their $77 a year discount but I declined. They kept pushing and pushing and eventually told me to call back if I changed my mind.

Fast forward to my cancellation date - They went ahead and charged me the full $145 yearly rate!! I had just paid a bunch of bills, credit cards, and etc and had ~$140 in my account so it overdrafted. I called them and they apologized, promised to credit my account that night, and gave me a fax number to fax my statements in order to get the overdraft fee refunded.

So, the next day - they RECHARGED my account another $145, and then credited $145 and $142 - So I got another overdraft AND they were still $3 short (not counting overdraft)

WTF.

The first fax number (to fax my bank statement showing the overdraft) they gave me was disconnected and google says it goes to GM?!! I called back and got another fax number which is disconnected. I call back this morning and got another fax number that just rings and rings and rings.

I call back and am told I should get a call within 72 hours to get it resolved.

Thanks XM.

XM probably has the worst customer service of any company I've ever dealt with. Absolutely horrible. It took 3 months to get them to remove 2 radios from our account. They kept saying they'd removed them, we'd get charged for them, called back and they'd say that we had taken a retention offer instead of removing the radios...straight up lying. Wait times to talk to a CSR are atrocious and the CSRs are downright rude.

Couldn't you just call your back and tell them to refuse any transactions they try to do to your account?

They did the exact same thing to me - I didn't want to make the post long and drawn out, but when they charged me the first $145 the first CSR insisted that she checked the logs and that I accepted the retention offer - I was like WTGDF no I didn't, and you didn't charge me the retention offer anyway ($77). I told her to find the recording of the conversation because I absolutely did not accept any offer whatsoever.

When I talked to a manager (yesterday) she seemed to be about the class of a mcdonalds employee. Very thick ghetto accent - I could barely understand her. She was rude when I asked her to verify the fax number twice.

Probably but it's too late for that I think. I'm not really sure. At this point they've given me back most of what they charged me but I want them to pay for the two overdrafts ($70) as well.

In order for them to cut me a check for the $70 I have to fax in a copy of my bank statement to their "Billing Ops" department - I'm having trouble getting a working fax number for that dept

Why people continue to use bank drafts rather than a credit card amazes me.

I figured XM was a legit enough company to be able to use my debit card.

Fair enough. But even the best companies screw up.

It's far better for them to fight your credit card company to get money, than it is for you to fight your bank to get it back.

Man, I would flip the hell out if I were in the same situation. And I'm not a guy who flips out often or easily 😛

On a side note, whats the fucking deal with overdrafts anyways? Yeah charge me a shit ton because I didn't have enough to begin with. How about the company doing the charges gets an insufficient funds error and comes to me. Makes more sense to me, but I guess banks can't make money doing that. I should look to see if my bank lets me stop the overdraft bullshit.

I can almost guarantee that they don't. I read somewhere that banks make more money off of NSF and other associated fees than anywhere else. They script the charges to go through in order of amount (largest to smallest) in order to procure as many overdraft fees as possible.

Their customer service is horrid..

i recently called to cancel and told them the exact reason was the "price is too high, and financially i cannot justify it" ... three times they tried to talk me into the $350 lifetime rate..

i finally said "look.. i told you the $35/quarter rate is too expensive and i cant justify it, what makes you think i can justify $350 then?"

morons..

Indeed. The fee at US Bank went up from $25 to $34 over the course of maybe three years, too. And the debit card still works just fine even after the account is overdrawn--convenient for them, isn't it?

Really, really simple.

1) Go to bank
2) Issue chargeback
3) Ask for refund of overdrafts
4) PROFIT!
5a) If problem continues put a block on your account for the amount they charge ($145 or whatever)
6a) PROFIT!!

Use a credit card instead of debit/etf.

Also, keep a bigger float balance in your checking IMHO. I stay around $1000, which is a bit high, but I'll never bounce.

Or do what I do:

I have a $2000 signature line of credit through my credit union. I keep very low balances in checking/savings since the interest rate is so pathetic. If, heaven forbid, I make a miscalculation and overdraft, it draws from the LOC with no fees. I can usually pay off the LOC within 24-48 hours, and I incur a few pennies in interest. Much better than worrying about an overdraft.
