WoW Downloader Question

It uses very little CPU but I swear I can't do anything else on the net when this thing is going. The transfer rates are ridiculously low as well so I decided to just use a friend's FP account (should have thought of this earlier) and download it from there. The thing is my computer was still terribly sluggish even after I canceled and closed the WoW BT client.

Do you guys know if this thing continues to transfer to others even after you close down the program? I had to restart in order to recapture my own damn computer. :p

Yes it quite possibly is the worst BT client ever. No, it doesn't continue to transfer after you close down the program, or at least it isn't supposed to. It's possible people who had connected to you before you closed it were trying to reconnect to your computer after you closed it, I don't know enough detail on the blizz downloader to say whether that happens or not.

It sucks, yes. On top of using various ports that the BT protocol doesn't usually need, it has no way to throttle your upload speed - capping this is what causes your connection to choke. You probably get low speeds due to not having all of the ports forwarded though.

I downloaded the update today from filerush.com It's in the user-submitted section on the right of their home page. Those files get hosted at the main filerush servers, and I usually pull down from them at 300 to 400 kbps. :)

A :cookie: and 4 :beer:s for spelling ridiculous correctly

And yeah, that downloader is quite poor. Best just to leave it and walk away. Course it can lock up too...

Total crap, I still cant believe over a year after release they are using this subpar delivery method for game patches.

Fileplanet has it and took me under 3 minutes to get. I would probably still be picking my ass with Blizzard crap solution.

If anyone needs the patch, I have it hosted on my server...

but try Fileplanet or 3dgamers first... use up their bandwidth money first... hehehe :)

YES, it does continue to download after you end it. I know because one time I started downloading on it thinking it was a small patch but then when I realized the size I went to FP and endtasked the WoW BT. Well, a little while later, the end part of the patcher process popped up on its own, wow patched and it reopened itself. So it must have been running in the background even after endtasked.

Hmmm, all of these problems. Sure, it's relatively slow. I think it took me 10-12 minutes to DL the 35MB patch yesterday. But it's not been problematic for me. So I can't complain too much. I always restart my computer afterwards just in case there's some background stuff going on.

No, it's just bittorrent without the ability to throttle your upload speed. And which requires additional ports. And which is buggy. :p I can't complain about the speed though, and I think the concept of distributing patches via BT is a good one - this is just an awful implementation.

I put up with it because I usually grab patches while the servers are still down, and speeds are adequate then (generally much better than if grabbing them in prime-time).

The lack of upload cap can be fixed with third party QOS or traffic shaping software. I used a free trial of one when I downloaded the open beta a year ago (50 MB patches here and there, no big deal... 2.5 gigs of the whole program, big deal). It not only made my connection usable and responsive for regular browsing, email and such, but it also made the dowloading for the downloader itself considerably faster.

I had downloaded 1600+ MB of video from limewire before blizzard was done with the patch yesterday. That was ridiculous.

Glad to know I am not alone. :p There is always some tiny bit of solace to be found in learning that others also share with you in your plight.

BTW, Malladine, make that 5 beers and 0 cookies bro. :)
