I think Ive got .05 btc sitting on a hard drive somewhere. Should probably see if its still there and try to figure out what to do with it.

Supposedly worth $4500? Time to do some digging.

You should be able to import that wallet.dat into a bitcoin wallet of your choice. You will however need to remember the password.

I have a coinbase account with $119 in bitcoin. Is it worth cashing out? I'm not sure what the fees would be. I have $136 total in various crypto and I don't care to keep any of it.

I believe with coinbase there are no fees for bank transfers, though there may be if you are withdrawing crypto to another wallet or exchange, also depending on the network. You should be able to trade for minimal fees to USD, and withdraw to your bank if you like.

Another day. Another surge. Current bitcoin price: $1,586. Ethereum: $88.14. Wouldn't surprise me if Ethereum takes out $100 soon.

Makes me wonder how many secret nerd billionaires exist now lol

ACH transfers are free. They may take awhile though.

now that it has hit 6 digits the profit taking has brought out the lurking hodl'rs. reddit has a post on someone who had $50 of btc in 2012 and cashed out for $1million. golden hands indeed.

the comments are full of people telling stories about lost wallet.dat, lost drives, or wallet keys written in pen in some text book they cant find. i suspect the amount of abandoned wallets means btc can never fall to zero because the people who put money into the system lost any way to cash out.

Finally confirmed my wallet. Now to figure out how to spend it. Delay looks like increased value another $500.
.05btc is $5042.

Crazy recovery story: (full thread is great!)

TLDR: The password generator used the system time as a seed.

All they needed was the exact software build used, and to set the system time to the million or so milliseconds closest to the estimated day and time it was generated in 2013. Trying 1 million passwords is easier than the hundreds of Trillions or so total possible combinations.

Also why you should use a true random seed source like Random.org when doing important shit.

A warning to improve your security hygiene!

The malware in question uses optical character recognition (OCR) to review a device's photo library, seeking screenshots of recovery phrases for crypto wallets. Based on their assessment, infected Google Play apps have been downloaded more than 242,000 times. Kaspersky says "This is the first known case of an app infected with OCR spyware being found in Apple’s official app marketplace."

I guess... This seems like a very specific hack that like 99+% of people would never face with a standard password manager using a built-in random generator.

I really don't have much crypto. I almost felt stupid taking these precautions but sometime being paranoid can pay off.

I moved everything to multiple USB drives and locked those up along with access protocols.

I still look at crypto as being like the Dutch tulip craze but it does have some practical uses. Not really at present but I'm sort of glad it exists. I think it helps to draw off a lot of the speculatory fervor that could/would infect regular markets.

That said, I'm very happy to see gold go to the moon even though it is only very slightly less rare than platinum

Platinum is much rarer, with about 0.005 parts per million found in the Earth's crust, while gold exists at around 0.004 parts per million.Oct 24, 2024

I am curious, isn't .005 PPM less rare than .004 PPM? According to that statement, shouldn't Gold be rarer?
