Have had it installed for over a month now on my main rig.... Updates everymorning.....

Just ran a full weekly scan, and it found 41 virii..... Some preventive protection, eh? 🙂

what did you download to get 41 virii?

just for sakes of trying .. i don't ever use an anti-virus but since im gonna order a new computer this week, i decided to do the annual "install a AV and check for viruses". Scanned 215 gigs of data and zero viruses. Updated AD-Aware and Spybot. 2 porn cookies and that was it.

I feel so clean.

AVG is great, didnt get infected by any viruses.....tho i may have downloaded them with kazaa...avg catches it when the file is in view of a file window

nothing that i can remember, weird...

I've had problem with AVG too, it kept telling that a certain file was infected, but the file did not exist on my system. Finally got fed up and dumped it. Search the Hot Deals forum for "free anti-virus" , I downloaded a version of InnoculateIT and it works great. Also get a spybot for added protection.

All AV software is retro protection, they can't release signatures until the virus is available. The only good virus protection is for the user not to be stupid.

Not true. While AV programs use signatures, they also use other techniques (which are improving) to catch unknown viri. A good example is the script blocking in NAV, thats done a great job at catching unknown script viri (it works so well that very few new script viri have emerged since it's release)

Well you would know more about the heuristics techniques than I would, but I've personally never seen it catch anything. And I think overall it would be better if IE would just sandbox things like the scripting it supports better but that probably won't happen any time soon.

I don't use AVG, but I will say that I have never gotten 41 viruses ("virii" is not a real word Dictionary.com doesn't list it.) in my lifetime of using computers (over 15 years) much less all at once. What are you downloading/doing to have that happen?

you did a full scan with AVG and it found them?

if so, it found them so it worked, but where did they come from, email or downloads?

I'm not so sure NAV would be any more effective catching viruses downloaded from kazaa or the net either, unless they are proactively scanned or get opened. (correct?)

NAV has saved my ass a few times. It's a worthy investment, it even scans outgoing e-mail so you don't spread nasties.

Autoprotect should see these when the file is downloaded and written to disk.
