Wow, AS3 DOES make a difference!

Well, I never knew that Artic Silver would make THAT much of a difference.
I've always used the cheapo generic thermal grease that came free with one of my CPU's awhile ago.
Though it was a small amount, I never used it up and thought it was a waste to buy new stuff.

But when I found AS3 for $5 shipped, I thought what the heck, so I bought it.
Re-applied PROPERLY (read the website on how to apply it to the HSF as well) it on all 3 of my pc's (XP1700, and 2 XP1600's).

Idle temps went from 46-50C to 43-48C, an average of 2-3C per cpu 😀

You didnt believe everyone else? 😛 Hehehe there is a reason Artic Silver is recommended quite highly... its very good stuff.

i am using the SVC heatsink with AS3 and my temp is a lil hotter around 44 C any comments on how to reduce this?

Thakns.

Well I did use ASII and it seemed to work good. But after buying better heatsinks and CPU's and trying to clean this stuff off I decided to go back to the ratshack stuff. IMO I don't think its worth the 3c lower to have to clean that crap up. When you go to wipe it off if any gets on the base good luck cleaning it off without having to use some high-end cleaner(which could damage the CPU). It just smears.

A little alchohol or acetone will take it right off.

Will someone please explain to me why anybody would fret over 40 degree CPU temperature? 30-60C processor temperatures are perfectly normal and not harmful to the processor at all. Why complain, and why get all happy if you "reduce" it by 3c? IMO, I don't care as long as the comp works and stays working, which mine has, just fine, with all normal/standard stuff.

Because on that same system that runs 50C idle, it hit 62C with load with a 50X CD-ROM spinning (warcraft 3 😀), so I was out to increase cooling by as much as possible.

First is with AS3. Next will be better airflow inside case.

There's many things you can do.

Use AS3 if you're not already using it.
Get a quality heatsink and high RPM fan (but sacrifice a quiet system).
Use a quality (aluminum optional, more expensive) case that provides good airflow (lots of well placed fans).
Use rounded IDE/floppy cables to help air flow better.
Run your system with the case cover off.
Keep your system in a cool place (basement or a/c room) with good air flow.
Blow an external fan at your case (I used a honeywell fan on mine and it really helps).

Notice most things emphasize GOOD AIR FLOW.

blow the FAN directly at the case? how does this help? i have an extra fan..... my case is sittin in a compartment thing built onto my desk....

Thanks.

Thanks.

Case covers/panels off. Fan pointed directly at the motherboard (non-swivelling/oscillating).

For me, it lowered temps by 3-5C.
Of course this was a temporary solution when temps got too high, but if you don't mind the extra space taken and noise maken, then by all means 😀

well do i have point the FAN like at the side of my case and do i have to keep cover off? b/c its a nice fan.

As someone stated earlier, 3 degrees (Celsius) is different from Fahrenheit; moreover, 3 degrees Celsius is a very nice improvement.

Between switching from an Athlon TB---->Athlon XP and from Radio Shack HS compound---->ASIII reduced my temps about 10-12C. :Q
