Their growth in the phone market has been huge. I thought I remember seeing a chart a few days ago that had like 600%+ growth in sales for phones. Market share was still smaller than it is for WinMo and Blackberry phones, but if Apple can maintain that kind of growth, Microsoft and RIM better watch out.

Can you imagine how many iPhones Apple would sell if they weren't stuck with only AT&T?

When the exclusivity deal is up, and iPhones are on Verizon, etc. as well, there will be iPhones EVERYWHERE.

I read an interesting bit the other day, talking about how Apple lets others develop new products, then takes the concept, polishes the hell out of it and sells a product that's very functional and looks great.

MP3's had been around for years, Apple made the iPod and made bank.

Smart phones same thing, nothing really new in the iPhone, just a slick interface and a shiny form factor.

Apple's entire product line is made up of devices refined and polished, and what they're doing is working very well.

If you're in the market for a quality laptop, the macbooks are clear winners. Before I bought the 13" a few weeks ago, I compared it to similar offerings from Lenovo (T400) and Dell (lattitude, I think) and they cost the same once you configure them with the same specs, yet the macbook is built way better than either of those.

The shocker is the amount of students at my university with them....

<-- uses an ugly, non-shiny 2006 era Toshiba notebook. Last time I buy one, had to RMA it over four times (thank goodness for extended warranties). Lenovo time when I finally enter the real world, well at least a permanent job aside from my graduate research assistantship.

I have two.

I have one Acer PC and three Acer monitors. I paid $270 for the Acer PC with a 17" CRT (gave it away) and a printer (gave it away). I think I paid $150 apiece for 2 Acer 20" widescreen LCDs, and ~$300 for an Acer 24" widescreen LCD. I buy Acer stuff because it's a good value.

I see a ton of Acer laptops around university, and I believe they're the number on netbook manufacturer.

Yea, if you're going to configure a similar laptop the macbook premium is much less. Honestly it's hard to find a PC Maker with a laptop that is as nice as the macbook [in terms of build quality/aesthetics]. Plus they retain value better than their PC counterparts so you could resale to someone hoping to get a mac.

If you're going for a cheaper laptop you can easily get a PC one for probably 400-500 though it won't be as nice in anyway as the macbook.

Why is it a shocker? You can get a new MacBook for around $1k which isn't unreasonable for a new laptop.

The iPhone is a great price for what you get compared to other smart phones.

I have neither...

My daughter (sophomore in college) is seriously low maintenance. She asks for virtually nothing, but last fall begged me for a Mac.

I bought her one. Then I bought a shitload of Apple stock...

Pics of daughter with macbook?

On a more serious note, how much do you help out with? Does she take care of tuition, room and board, and living expenses?

I'm not sure I'd call MP3s a product. Also, I think what they are doing is more watching the market and being able to predict the direction it will take.

They saw MP3s getting popular, and knew they wouldn't go away, so they developed a product for it. They've been making computers for years, and were among the first personal computers. They made a few poor choices back then and MS capitalized on it, but Apple learned and is now going better than ever.
