So I went to this place today and had lunch, and this is my impression. It needs a little bit of work. The lady (who speaks 7 different languages) was amazingly nice but I found some of the food a little lacking. However it is only the third day they were open and she admitted that she has a lot of bugs to work out. I had the Paratha (bread stuffed with different .. well stuffings) and it was excellent. I also tried the veggie squares, the masala dosai, the poori, and the chapati (I was hungry and with friends). The veggie squares were excellent, the dosai was a little raw, the daal she served was cold (though she heated it up when I asked her) and the poori and chapati were also a little on the thick side. I would definitely try this again ... because it is so close, it's so cheap, the lady is so nice, and I can imagine the food being very good once they iron out some basic logistical issues. It has the distinction of being one of the only places in berkeley that serves South Indian food (there is another but I refuse to go there on the grounds that the owner is a slumlord who prostitutes underage women)

For those in the bay area, Viks does serve meat on weekdays - chicken, lamb, and sometimes fish specials.

My bad ... I haven't been there on a weekday in a while, I didn't realize that.

Restaurants shouldn't have "bugs" to work out... :disgust:

Probably the wrong word to use .... the place was VERY clean (much cleaner than the Kim's Super Burrito that used to be there ... what kind of place serves Korean Food and Mexican Food together?) .... I would wait a week or two (they're redoing the menu and having a grand opening for Diwali on November 3rd) and then try it.

I never thought I'd see a fully vegetarian restaurant suceed in the US.

There are at least 25 vegetarian restaurants here in Atlanta.

At least 2 are vegan-Chinese and 1 is vegan-Indian.

I live in Atlanta, which restaurants are you talking about?

we've even got one here in austin... at least one, that is.

mmm madras pavilion.

dosas rock!

on another thought... you know why european veggie fare sucks, right (other than pasta, that is)? they didn't have vegetables untill just a short while ago. most europeans ate bread, pounds of bread, every day. part of it was a generally cool period in north america and europe that lasted from 1300 to about 1850, and only very recently has there been the sort of infrastructure neccesary to move food around the world. when vegetables were made they weren't the focus, they were a side.

thanks for the quick review lukatmyshu, they seriously just bought the place a couple of months ago and it was empty until just a week ago. they basicaly opened overnight! i don't know much about indian food, but the prices seem fair so it looks like i'll be doing some "learning" soon! hmm... they are closed already tonight. *stomach grumbles*

kim's super burrito was super shady 🙂

We ended up talking to the owner for a while and she has worked at quite a few big name restaraunts and Hotel back in India ... she came here a year ago and found out about this place and decided to go for it. I would wait a week or so and then try it out, she seemed to really underestimate the crowd. When I went there (around 12:20) she was already fairly behind on her orders, LOL, she couldn't understand why so many people started walking in around 12:15 ... the nice thing is that she has a lot of food that you usually don't get in most restaraunts .... like Upma (it's kind of like cream of wheat) and of course dosai

there are some asian tofu places too😛 tofu can be made into lotsa things apparently. some kinda simulate meat🙂

i loved kim's super burritto! it had awesome breakfast burrittos, and the korean food was actually really good. 🙁
sigh, and i never tried that "dish" restaurant either... but i suppose it wasn't too good, if it closed in such a short time. oh well
