For a gaming system, picking between this, the 720 BE, and the 940 BE, how do the price/performance compare?

For gaming in MOST current games... the 710 or 720 will suffice, and can overclock just as high as a 940BE. The 720 is also BE, so it's "easier" to overclock somewhat, but if you know what you're doing the 710 will get you there too.

Also, keep in mind the potential to unlock the 4th core on the 710/720's. 🙂

Dollar for Dollar, the 710 is a kickass deal.

I've been looking for a Q6600 to replace my X3110 I have now.
After seeing this deal, I may have to go away from the dark side...hehehe.

Great price, i personally would get the 720 BE model, but this is a great deal. The only thing competing against it from intel in that price range is the Dual-Core E7400 2.8GHz cpu.

can "good" motherboards still max out on HTT and limit your OC?
just curious, since i will have to get a brand new mobo along with a proc, mgiht as well get this if a good mobo does not hinder it.

I'm still feeling unclear about the tradeoffs between 710/720/940, if anyone has more comments (e.g., percent improvement of each over the other chips).

I saw that the710 is a 'great value', but that's not quite enough to say 'and a clearly better pick than the other choices'. (Or is their yet some other chip screaming 'best value').

I should say, I'm not sure I'll do anything 'fancy' in unlocking the 4th cpu or overclocking. I might take a look at it sometime but would give some weight to the default performance.

I just ordered the 710/Biostar mobo combo from Newegg, $40 combo discount but can't use the promo code too 🙁

Fingers crossed!

thx, didn't know there was a combo deal for the CPU 😀

If you also need a better HSF to go with this chip.
You can get the 710 + the Xigmatek S1283 HSF combo for $136 and there's also a $10 rebate for the S1283. You save yourself $20.
Link.
