I bolded the parts that made no sense. The guy said until the Athlon was made Intel could charge a premium. So he was talking only about Pre-Athlon era. dexvx rebuttled with the Athlon, which was clearly out of the timeframe.
Kalessian, that wasn't a personal attack. If it felt/seemed like it to you, then I apologize. But, I really was there, buying processors back then. If that seems like one upmanship to you, it shouldn't; it's just simple fact. It took me almost 2 months to save up the money to buy a 20 Mhz 486-SX (Intel's first attempt at a Celeron). And that wasn't for the whole system, that was just for the processor.

lopri thanks for the analysis, I somehow got the feeling Dell has been anticipating AMD+ATI merger for a while and decided this thing will make AMD much better at supplying OEMs. By signing AMD, Dell can put pressure on Intel pricewise. Also in case they can't supply enough chips. However, I can't say AMD is scavanger, they certainly didn't hesitate in raising X2 prices to sky high when there's nothing else that can catch it. I think with their growing size, they are sometimes acting as a bully and not the AMD in the pre Athlon era that banks on providing value for people. However, I do sympathize with their position, for many years they haven't been able to turn a profit. Gotta make the cash when there's a chance.

It's just an analogy for bigger ones and smaller ones. I pulled the story out of my ass so don't put too much weight. ;)
