Look what I just got in my email. Did anyone else get this?
Hello from Amazon.com.

Good news! We've just lowered the price of "Harry Potter and the
Half-Blood Prince" from $17.99 to $16.99.

You don't need to do anything to get the lower price--we are automatically
issuing you a $1.00 refund. This refund should be processed in the next
few days and will appear as a credit on your next billing statement. We'll
also send you a follow-up e-mail to confirm the refund once it has been
completed.

Thanks again for shopping at Amazon.com. We hope you enjoy your book!

Most likely, people did $17.99 + $3 ship = $20.99 at Amazon.

They probably thought it was better than 1000s of people returning it to get the lower price at their stores.

Imagine the headache of having to pay for shipping for 1000s of returns and 1000s of slightly new/used books.

Anyone who did that is a moron because it would cost time and they would have to pay return shipping.

It's amazing people still buy books.

Actually, it's amazing people still read.

They do? 😕

I think Harry Potter barely qualifies as reading. When's the last time most of these people picked up a copy of a good book that isn't pop fiction. How about Edgar Allan Poe?

I read the first three HP books, then I got tired of them, but even though the book doesn't have that high of a reading level, it provides entertainment to people. There are numerous people who read magazines/newspapers for entertainmetnt, which has about a 6th grade reading level. I don't see people condemning them for the reading level of those works. Although, I find one of my most entertaining reads to be Hamlet, I think the fact that people's imaginations are sparked is a plus. There are too many closed minded people.

Who says books have to be fine literature to "qualify as reading"? I enjoy good books more often than "beach reading" fare, and although I wouldn't compare Rowling to Poe, she crafts a pretty good story. I've enjoyed all of the Potter books immensely, and I can't wait to read the 6th one. A good book should be engaging and entertaining; it doesn't have to be complex and difficult.

Poe isn't known for books...he's known for his short stories.

edit: And there's nothing wrong with a good STORY...symbolism & all that crap might make it "literature," but that doesn't mean much in my book

I'm not a fan of the HP series and I would say the reading is on a simplified level. I'm not dogging by any means -- it's just not on the same level as say, the latest John Grisham novel.

Having said that, for some people, the HP books are probably the only real books they read every year. That's a good thing versus those who don't read a thing outside of the comics and magazines, and hopefully it leads to more books being read.
