FF will start downloading immediately so if you take a minute to figure out where you want to put the file and then click ok you will see big numbers like that. Even hundreds of K will show on a pots line.
We all know you can't push that much stuff through a straw.

Yea I'm using the Gigabit Ethernet controller, dont know what it is really...ahh well it's 'stabilized' now it's only pushing about 9-10 megabytes a sec with some other random downloads which is more on par with what it has been downloading at all year....

Bleh.....Java is evil I swear it seems to come with attached spyware, so not to be a jerk but I'm not going to download and install the java plugin, but I think it was just a flunk or something....anyways I've got 8am class and it's almost 1:30am here....yay for lectures on pediatric immunity at 8am
Thats B.S. sorry to say. It wasn't even a fluke, it just didn't happen. You must be confused or like someone else said, was just the html file that downloaded.

Just click to download the file, take your sweet time to hit okay to actually download it... firefox starts downloading it immediately so it seems as though it's going really fast. I really max out at something like 875 kB/s

You'll install games and other rogueware but balk about java? You're running FF. Sheesh!
There, youve just solved your own mystery. Downloads dont "stabilize". Youre downloading at 10 MB a second (which is still borderline, honestly), but the counter doesnt start until you click ok, at which points its already downloaded several seconds worth.
if other students have downloaded the same file, it could be stored in the proxy cache. i.e., already stored on the university network cache, then it would just be a matter of transferring it to the student. altho you wonde how such a large file could be moved so quickly on the network.
exactly. with big networks with lots of users you often see use of proxy caches to speed up download, and also they tend to filter the content as it passes through to get rid of undesirable content.
opera starts to download immediately, as well. so by the time you decide where you want to save it, the download can have been completed.
I don't see why people keep on comparing their crappy DSL or cable to a school's internet connection. Many universities have OC3 connection which allows for ~155 Mbps of bandwidth which roughly translates to a little less than 20 megs a sec. Many universities have even faster connections over Internet 2 and can easily push beyond with a backbone that supports up to 10Gbps of bandwidth. Not all universities are this lucky obviously, but it isn't impossible to reach even what some people are considering the borderline 10 meg/s. Before calling shens, maybe some of you should start researching what cutting edge internet technology (always implemented in the academic setting first) can really do. This isn't your typical Verizon DSL bs.

What really should matter is...what mirror did you download it off of and how quickly does the possible I2 line transfer to I1?

I'm not saying he was getting it at 50 MB/s, but considering his potential bandwidth, it isn't out of the question to have his download finish in the 3 seconds after he's finally decided where to store his files.
