I just got back from my cs discrete structures class. I find it kind of challenging and requires alot of thinking. However, there is this blind person in my class that is able to answer alot of problems that the professor asks us. Im just like wtf, I'm having a tough time answering it, how is he able to answer the question when he cant even see the problem on the blackboard. All he has is his brain to sort the logic out along with his ability to hear. I'm really impressed, as these problems are long and really require you to rearange and visualize it on paper. I really admire someone like that. That just means that I should pay attention better and focus more. I wonder how he managed to pass the other cs classes if he cant see, because the lower level classes require us to do intensive programming.

Sure. When he is outside, swing at his mellon with a baseball bat and say the word "Duck" and see what response you get. That will tell ya how smart he is.

you think blind people are dumb?

the other Network Engineer in my group is blind, what does smarts have to do with vision?

i guess if you have never worked around a blind person it may seem odd, but when you interact with a blind guy everyday, you get so you are surprised when he can't do something

BTW before he was a Network Engineer he was a programmer, so i don't see why you think a blind person would have trouble with a programming class

FoBot reread my post carefully. I didn't criticize blind people, and in no way stated I thought blind people were dumb. That kind of assuption is just stupid. I'm just saying that he must be really brilliant to figure out some of the problems we discussed in class because they require that you use paper to figure them out. For example, in a math class, if ur trying to solve a long equation, or trying to proove something is true or false thorugh the use of mathematical induction, it takes a series of steps to arrive at the solution. Most people would do that on paper, since it is extremely difficult to just arrive at the answer without working at it. The blind person in my class was able to answer them without visualizing them on paper, so I was very impressed with his skills.

Wouldn't he need to see to debug his code? How can someone write flawless code? Or am I not thinking of something?

Exactly what went through my mind.

I also wonder how he keeps track of the logs.

That's not what rutchtkim said though. I can't imagine having to study/learn with my eyes closed either.

Why? Too hard to type like that with one hand?

Do they have any kind of computer interface for deaf & blind people? I saw a telephone device that had a robotic hand a few years ago. I think it needed an operator to send it the text of the regular caller though.

you don't have to see to use a computer

my friend at work uses a program called JAWS , it converts all the text on his computer to speech and he hears it, he can type faster than me

blind people can use a normal telephone, it isn't that hard to memorize the location of the keys on a telephone, there are only 12 of them

Is he a skinny Indian guy? Huh I knew a blind guy at Rutgers. He had a sorta crush on me because I was courteous and helped him out at the computer labs when I worked there.:p:eek:

Hmmm... does he have a strong accent and always sit in the front of the class?

If so he was in my 206 class last summer...
