Had to give this a shot after reading about using the Zalman7000B-Alcu cooler on video cards in this thread- http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/sho...d.php?t=86530&highlight=X1800XT+Zalman

The results were better than I could have hoped for. I bought the VF900 recently for my X1800XT and it did an allright job of cooling the card. But I was really hoping to push the voltage more for greater OC'ing with the card.

With the VF900 I could only go up to around 729 core and 873 memory using 1.475 volts before heat became an issue. In BF2 and COD 2 the temps would peak at 81 deg. C.

Now with the 7000B-Cu (I used the all copper version) I can go to 774 core and 891 memory using 1.550 volts. But the best part is my temps in BF2 and COD 2 now top out at only 58-59 deg. C!!! And the AS5 hasn't cured yet so may go down a couple more degrees still.

Probably not the mod for everyone as I now can't use any of my PCI slots below the card because the cooler obstucts all 3. And also had to actually grind down the bottom PCI slot so the fan would clear it.(Looks like my motherboard's warranty just expired- Oh well- just a $65 Chaintech board).

Anyway very happy with the solution it's as quiet as the VF900 and now will never have to worry about the cards temp. again.

Edit- for pics on this better than I could take see the last post in the thread that's linked.

I did! Not sure why the peeps in the thread didn't..The all copper version is almost 2x heavier though so that may be it.

It would with no problems. But I just run my motheroard out in the open on the desk next to my monitor. The weight issue might be more pronounced if you ran it in a case as all the weight would be pulling the video card downwards...But with my mobo horizontal the cooler just rests on the 2nd PCI slot.

The 9500 would be awesome! But more difficult to install and more $$. But wow the temps would be insane..Probably real close to water.

Nice mod. Using an AMD DC hsf is another popular one. Fits with no mods to the motherboard and works very well.

Thanks for the link! Have bookmarked it, as I have one of those coolers sitting idle. Now if only Canada had some of those 1800xt's.:beer:

Nope- no bar or anything - I got lucky and cut the fins on the cooler back just far enough that the cooler now rests on the 2nd PCI slot below the vid card. So all the weight rests on the mobo and the vid card actually leans "up" a little.(I have my mobo flat on a dest so it wouldn't work quite as well in a case).

Yeah the link will come and go as it's extremesystems and their forums there are down about half the time it seems...

Heh- and yeah the weight- I sat in CompUSA with the copper version in one hand and the ALCU version in the other doing the seesaw weight comparo going "hhhmmmm....I dunno...." Store workers probably thought me a bit touched....

That would be cool to see. Pun not intended but too lazy too change. I knew I should have bought a dual core....
