Yes Harry Turtledove's Guns of the South but it was AK47s but there was other stuff aswell. Been awhile since I read it.

And many Northerners didn't wan't to have the war (didn't care), but Lincoln knew he would look better if he kept the union together and ended slavery. Even just before the war, his longterm goal wasn't to end slavery.

People in the Civil war era would do better than you think. People have always been resourceful and inventive. In Vietnam, the Vietnamese held the US off not by challenging us in the skies or dominating with technology, but by using old-fashioned tricks and tactics. Blend in with the people and they won't know who to shoot. Attack when the enemy least expects it. Stuff like that.

And the technology back then was still enough to kill more than 500,000 people.

There were an awful lot of ditch diggers back in those days. If somone appeared with an M1, they wouldn't have any problem putting ditches everywhere. The M1 would fall into a ditch, and where would you refuel it, anyway?
