I am not hardware expert like most people here. But would not teh combine ability of both company combine create a super company and give us product that is best of both worlds?

Speed is the last thing that they need to improve on right now. Lowering heat and power consumption while adding cores and bumping the cache is more important for performance.

Adding cores will only take them so far. Can you envision using 8 cores at home while most apps are single-threaded and that is not going to change anytime soon.
IMHO, computers as we know today are getting a bit stale. A new killer app must be developed or the computer industry will end up like most other manufacturing industries (slow development, longer product cycles and a slowdown in the market). The only thing spurring the current growth is competition and if AMD and Intel merge, you can kiss that goodbye OP.
