Wouldn't a 30" monitor be almost too big for desk top use?

depends

if you got a small desk you'd probably need to turn your head to look at it all

if you gots a fairly large desk like i have here at uni (but not at home) then it probably works out better.

im looking to get at least a 24inch tft in the summer, but im gonna have to buy a new desk for my room at home so i can actually use it! (my current desk space barely fits a 17 inch tft and a keyboard on at home!)

As long as you can sit far enough back. I don't see at as a problem. I've got a 24" and its pretty damn nice. At first it was weird feeling for me on the desktop so yeah it did take a little bit of getting use to but for gaming is was always just plain amazing.

Seems like it would be, but I'm sure you'd get used to it. Like others have said, it depends how close you sit. I remember thinking a 20" monitor was "too big" when I first got one many, many years ago. :)

Well, generally no. However, a panel that large would probably require most people to make changes to how they use their system. Sitting further back, upping the text size, or, in my case, removing the hutch from the top of my desk.

Never

At work we have 2 22in CRTs, 2 20+ in LCDs, and 1 17 in LCD - you can never have enough real estate :)

What kind of desk do you have and where can I get one?

Perhaps at first, but after using a Panasonic 37" plasma for awhile a regular sized monitor looks impossible. It's about 36" away and I love it. Getting the correct resolution is not simple but worth the effort. Using XP MCE 2005 gives many more resolution options and I see no down side unless you need to join multiple domains.

It depends on the resolution IMO. That Dell 3007's size and resolution are good for games but I wouldn't want to use it for general Windows tasks. From what I've seen of the Apple 30", if you sit close to it you have to keep turning your head a lot to see things in the corners, but if you sit further away from it the text becomes way too small.
