For me, it would have to be someone better looking in both cases. If they broke it off, then I'd like to think they broke it off for someone better looking. If I thought the guy was uglier than me, then it would be like damn.. I'm that ugly?

If I broke it off, I'd want them to be happy and not suffer w/ some ugly dude. lol.

It must not have been a very meaningful relationship if they only broke it off because they found someone better looking. This assumes they were attracted to you to begin with, however, and that you didn't suddenly start totally neglecting your appearance.

On the other hand, when I get rejected by a girl and later see her with some guy that I figure is not as good looking as I am, I do wonder what she sees in him.

If by uglier you mean someone with a full head of hair, then I say why not. Wouldn't want her to to discriminate against those poor folically challenged individuals who can't control their hair growth.
