we also take our boys (5 & 3) to a pediatric dentist and they encourage the parents to come back at least the first time. After the initial visit, and if the child is okay, then there is no need to go back with them.

The dentist doesn't have private rooms either, it's an open area with 6 or so chairs divided only by instrument clusters and toy/games/book bins.

first visit not allowed is really odd. My dentist never had a policy like that.

I don't know if they have just had a really really bad string of "OMG WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO MY KID" parents and just went F it, no more parents or if they are sketchy in the pedo or fraud sort of way... regardless since I think that's something you would not normally go through at most dentists you shouldn't tolerate it at this one.

Failed to mention that same thing about our kids' pediatric dentist.

Very strange policy, I would definitely dump that dentist. My parents would chat with my local dentist while a cleaning was being done clear up until I was 16 (then I could drive myself to the dentist :)).
Every dentist I've ever been to is like that.

You were 15 and your mom/dad was sitting by your side?

No,
instead of sitting in the waiting room bored, they came in to say hi to the dentist(same guy they've been going to for the past 2 decades).

Having a rule that says you cannot be in the room is just plain sketchy, especially if they enforce on little kids.

Exactly, By the time I was going to the dentist, my parents knew the dentist pretty well (have have 7 older sister and 3 older brothers, all went to the same dentist). It didn't have a lot to do with comforting me by the time I was 4 or so.

I suspect that this is the reason. In my experience, many young children behave better when their parents aren't around. Helicopter parents suck.

However, if it were my kid, I'd feel better if there were a CCTV I could monitor.

Agree with the helicopter parents comment, however the policy is a bit harsh for kids that young.

As for OP, I agree, seems odd to me. 3 yr old is kinda young and it would be understandable.

Maybe they get a lot of back seat drivers? Parents who meddle with proper care of their kids?

Why would they care how old the kid is. There's no reason to deny anyone access as long as they aren't getting in the way.

I agree with you.

I once worked for a Dentist who had that policy. Although he just plain wouldn't let parents come to the appt. room with any kids of any age. It was horrible. I had to tell the parents they couldn't come in. Some of them got irate with me, and I couldn't blame them.

I can see a little of what the Dentist is trying to avoid. Some kids play it up for sympathy when their parent(s) are in the room, but even still I would never deny parents being allowed to go in with their child if it were my decision. It was the Dentist who told me I had to enforce his policy, and because of this and other reasons I didn't stay under his employ for long.

JoeMonkey, you were right. I would so go to another Dentist.

My brother, I and my parents have always been able to walk into each other's rooms when the dentist was doing his thing and just shoot the shit with him (even now and I'm 25). There's no way I'd let them take a 3 year old all alone... that's a good way to traumatize him for the rest of his life.

Shit I think dentists traumatized me around that age, maybe a few years older, even with my parents there, sometimes holding my hand. I'll completely admit... I fucking hate dentists with a passion. The first ones I had as a kid were terrible, definitely, just not competent at doing the things right with minimal pain.

However, the dentist we've been going to for awhile (and who I haven't returned to in quite a while), I still fucking hate. The dentist is good, and makes it as light of an atmosphere as he can while the whole place looks sterile as usual, has a calm and relaxed approach. But fuck, even with a full shot of Novocaine in my mouth, and laughing gas, I still felt drills when they were deep. Yes, I have cavities. My mouth is extremely prone, I just keep getting them no matter what. Fucking teeth. But anyway, when he drilled at anything that wasn't simply scraping the surface, shit that still hurt. Worst pains in my life have been from dentistry. And that's after having a 2 month headache/neckache that the first two weeks completely knocked me out and prevented me from even doing, well... anything. I still put dentists above that level of fuck no I don't want that again.

I used to always use novocaine only, and after determining that there has to be more they can do to knock down the pain, I requested laughing gas the last appointments. Knocked down the superficial drilling pain quite a bit, just more of a vibration as I was a little in loopy land but could still realize that "shit, they're drilling, argh".

Next time I ever go to a dentist, it's novocaine, and laughing gas. When they check up on me, seeing how I'm feeling... the laughing gas isn't going to be doing anything. Hopefully I'll be able to convince them to up the ratio of N2O in the air mix. Send me off to complete happy land, let me forget you're even poking around with a drill please.
