Would you trust a dentist that didn't let you go back with your child?

My wife just IM'd me that our 3yo daughter has her first dentist appointment scheduled and they have a policy that at the age of 3 parents cannot go back with their kids. I immediately told her that was BS and to cancel the appointment, and she seemed kind of shocked. How would you guys react?

I think 3 is a little too young for that, some kids are still really clingy at that age. I would say 5 or 6 myself. Though i don't know that I would have canceled the appointement. Just don't use that dentist again.

F that

My brother, I and my parents have always been able to walk into each other's rooms when the dentist was doing his thing and just shoot the shit with him (even now and I'm 25). There's no way I'd let them take a 3 year old all alone... that's a good way to traumatize him for the rest of his life.

same as you did

If it was something like 16 where they drew the cutoff line, maybe. But three?
EDIT: I don't think they should even say that you can't bring anyone back, no matter the age

I would even go as far as to say that sounds really sketchy, find a new dentist

sounded sketchy to me too, htf do i know he's not some crazy pedo?

Very strange policy, I would definitely dump that dentist. My parents would chat with my local dentist while a cleaning was being done clear up until I was 16 (then I could drive myself to the dentist 🙂).

It's not uncommon.
Sometimes the kids do better when mom or dad isn't right there next to them.
Personally, I don't like the idea and I would rather be in the room with a small child.

Every dentist I've ever been to is like that.

I'd do the same thing. With all the possible negligence that could occur, I wouldn't let the kid out of my sight.

both our kids (now 5 and 7) go to a specialized pediatric dentist. The first time they each went 1 parent was allowed to go back with them. After that, while still allowed it was strongly suggested that they (at least try to) go back alone. 1st visit? "Not allowed" seems like BS. Did your wife protest and they still simply denied? Maybe something was lsot in the translation? Maybe they just strongly recommended against it (which is retarded) but it came off as "not allowed"?

You were 15 and your mom/dad was sitting by your side?

This seems to more common with lower income dentist/dentist shops. There was a story on how they did not want the parents to see what went on. They would strap the kids down to the chair and start working on them and do as much as they could get out of the Gov/Insurance.

Not saying that is the case here, but as a parent I would have done the same and left. Find a new dentist.

No,
instead of sitting in the waiting room bored, they came in to say hi to the dentist(same guy they've been going to for the past 2 decades).

Having a rule that says you cannot be in the room is just plain sketchy, especially if they enforce on little kids.

mine did a couple of times because they knew the guy otherwise, and just chit chatted and caught up with him. when i drove myself they didnt bother to go anymore

They are probably trying to rip you off. I took my daughter to a popular pediatric dentist around here... video games, bright colors, all that crap. They said she had two cavities and that insurance would not pay.

I knew insurance would so I took her to my dentist and he could not find any cavities.
