Speaking of challenges, the hottest commercially prepared food I've had is this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2RPRJiVWPI

I did it at the same location he's in, the Brick Lane in NJ.

It's brutally hot but the thing that makes it really challenging is the flavor. It's absolutely terrible, about like I'd imagine cigarette ash to taste but with massive heat on top of it.

My waiter said they get around 10 attempts a month with one success.

It's all about what you're used to eating. If you eat enough, hot enough peppers, your tolerance goes up and you start to enjoy the flavor more.

I would have no problem eating that, maybe even several, but $5 for a chip is crazy. You can grow thousands of peppers for <$5 worth of fertilizer and water (compost, sun, soil and rain are free). That's the rate I get, though these are only 1/2 to 2/3rds as hot as a Reaper so divide thousands by 2, lol.

I'd probably try it. Downside is I find my teeth are kinda intolerant to really hot stuff now. They start to hurt pretty bad. I'd still try it though.

I would want a glass of water at the ready. I don't care what people say, water does help. It gets the initial sting out, the rest you just have to let it pass.

^ Tooth sensitivity to hot temperatures has no relation to hot pepper sensitivity. It's the one area of the mouth that isn't effected.

The most effective way to decrease heat is washing it down with milk, or eating it with cooked egg whites. Good way to win a bet - hard boil some eggs, dump the yolks out, shove peppers into the whites before eating them. It makes a huge difference in how much heat your mouth and throat feel, specific proteins bind to the capsaicinoids.

Well when I eat anything hot my teeth tend to hurt. I like to dump scriatchia on stuff as if it was ketchup and I always pay for it. Worth it though. :p

I would wonder if you have gum disease (and/or just too stiff a toothbrush) and it's the acidity or salinity of the sauce that's an irritation rather than the capsaicinoids. Hot sauce is an age old (attempted) remedy for toothache.

Yeah my tolerance to eating chilli is high enough that I wouldnt be too worried by eating these chips. The problem comes at the other end! For some reason my tolerance doesnt work that way! I can eat scorpions fine, I just know that I'm going to suffer the next day. You lose your chilli tolerance really quickly I find as well.

^ Yes that other-end issue is most likely if eating raw pods, not so much if they are processed into a chip powder, sauce, cooked in food, etc.

Haha actually that is one thing I have realized with age, sometimes if I eat too much hot stuff, let's just say I get to re-feel the heat a second time. :p Ring of fire.....
