$70/mo for 1000/1000?

I currently pay $14/mo for 100/100, and it's fast enough most of the time tbh. I don't think I'd pay $56/mo for 1000/1000. But it might be worth it for people who need full speeds to/from everywhere in the world, if Google even does that.

Good ISPs already do that.

It's just a matter of peering/routing...

Just because you have 1Gbps doesn't mean everybody else does.

$70/mo for 1000/1000?

I currently pay $14/mo for 100/100 and it's fast enough most of the time tbh, so I don't think I'd pay an additional $56/mo for 1000/1000. But it might be worth it for people who need full speeds to/from anywhere in the world, if Google even does that.

I think we're paying ~$70/mo and I'm lucky to have it working for 24 consecutive hours, let alone at rated speeds.

I currently have Charter (only provider to my building), and i long for the days of Comcast. That should tell you A LOT.

Hell yes, and if I didn't like it I would bet Time Warner would bend over backwards to get me back as a customer.

Currently almost paying that much for lousy ADSL that frequently desyncs and swaps IPs every now and then.

If they offered 100/100 at that price, I'd still force my money down their throats.
Finally, no more hosting issues, and my home is truly connected and alive, and not attached to a medical drip, where I can upload to my mobile device at 512k...
Not to mention file sharing with other fiber users in the area being so bleeding fast...reminds me of stories of ye olde DC++ days, when 10/10 was required to even join a hub..

Is google fiber something that would ever be deployed to semi-rural areas? Cable internet is, for example and DSL too, they just don't do too well on actually getting meaningful download speeds in rural areas.

I kind of agree with this.

If Google were to really expand this, most telcos have fiber out there and would just need to extend it.

If people think Google has a leg up in terms of infrastructure with fiber, they're dead wrong. ;)

Sorry to break everybody's bubble.

No bubble broken. I believe that google's ultimate objective is faster internet for the masses because that's where their profit lies. More people accessing google services without fear of caps and overages so that they can push their ads. It doesn't matter if they are the ones providing it or the telcos. I think if google even breaks even in fiber they're happy.

Currently paying $40/month for 50/5. 1000/1000 is tempting... but I don't think I could use all that speed anyways.

Am I the only one that hasn't heard of Google fiber before? At first I thought Google had gotten into the agricultural business or something. I should know better being that this is a tech forum.

I've got Verizon FiOs for cable and Internet, and I'm pretty happy with it. I'm happy enough with 15/5 Internet service.

I'd have to look at Google's TV channel offerings to see if it's passable before i'd consider a switch.

Have no need for anywhere close to 1Gbps. Would be nice if they offered 10/10 or 20/20 for $20/mo or something else in between free and $70/mo, the tiers (or lack thereof) makes no sense to me, but I'm sure the bean counters at Google have a good reason for offering what they do.

Probably not. Wouldn't want them tracking and mining everything I do.

I second that, my privacy is important to me, besides I can do everything I want on the internet without any frustration over speed. Games, music, movie, everything works flawlessly, I am not sure what I will do with moahr speed.

Free for 5mbps is fine for me... $50/month for FIOS isn't necessary

Most likely, though I'd likely wait a month or two to let it 'stabilize'. My current utility with Cox is reliable, though much slower than gFiber.

Hell Yes.

The speed alone is worth it, plus a DVR that can record 8 shows at the same time? A bunch of coworkers and myself have already started getting people to pre-register to try and get them to come to our area.

Charter is way overpriced for what I have now, and I really don't care if they grab anonymous usage statistics from me.

Nay...

just because it's google.

Too much power concentrated in those guys
. I don't trust their integrity to stand fast against government demands for data about me.

But you trust Cox/Comcast/AT&T/Charter/etc? If anything, Google might be more safe because they get more scrutiny from private advocacy groups.

Trust? NO!

Forced choice! (Verizon here in the 805, and I also have Comcast at my other office in the 707)

What are we gonna do?

Falling back on principles: I frequently read just for personal improvement (hopeless cause?) in the Thomas Jefferson Digital Archive. I've become a believer in his conviction that every power-weilder MUST HAVE some countervailing force.

Therefore, human civilization SHOULD promote counterbalances working against aggregators of excessive power & influence, which google has become, not necessarily by design, and maybe because of excellence.

Nevertheless, too much power concentrated in google! I won't cooperate...ANOTYHER EXPRESSION OF my "civil" (as in polite) disobedience!
