I think random disasters that kill lots of random but large numbers of people at a time are better...that way you'll feel free but at the same time control over population.

No, absolutely not. Another option for men to choose once they are 18? Sure.

Bump for the morning crowd - lots of negativity on this one. While I understand the potential for problems, I was more interested in the opinion of the theoretical scenario where the device/surgery works perfectly.

reproduction is a fundamental human right/freedom

where we got off track is thinking that food/shelter/healthcare should ever be the burden of the state. i can see how if you support the latter, you could justify the former. and to me, thats seriously f'ed up.

I can't stop imagining this coming with the "whoop whoop" sound that car alarms make when you hit the remote button.

I'm for it, as long as they install a cool LED so I know when the shields are down!

Weird, you don't believe in basic human quality of living? It's kind of part of being a highly advanced civilization, you shouldn't need to have people dying in the streets.

yeah, come on, didn't you know? In countries that can actually afford this surgery, a high birth rate is a huge problem!

Nothing is a Right..or a God given right. Everything is really just a privilage. If you had the "right" to do something, then it shouldn't be allowed to be taken away, nor should it cost money or be worth any type of monitary value. Also, we aren't a highly advanced civilation. Maybe compared to the barbarians back in the day we have better technology, but no way are we even close to considered "highly advanced".

I disagree. However, I think a better explanation would be that we are a high knowledge but low wisdom civilization. We are advanced enough to be able to wipe ourselves off this plane of existence. That has to count for something.

To the matter at hand, a remote would be a great idea. I would love one. However, I believe it would be way too easy for anyone with power to abuse. For example: Someone ends up having a high likelihood of having a mentally handicapped child. I could easily see someone in power deciding it would be a bad idea for that person to procreate, and thus never turn the device off.

It is also way too close to forced sterilization, which the US has done before. IIRC, the government did it to a bunch of black women (without their knowledge) about 50 years ago or so. So I would say this is a horrible idea.

I don't like the government infringing upon any of my rights, and would not want a mandatory "put it in all teens" deal.

If it weren't forced, I would very much be in favor of a pro-get-this-done campaign to try and get people to do this by their own choice.

Not to start an arguement here on a dif topic..but being highly advanced to me is a relavent term. If you are open minded to things like like "aliens" or "ufo's" then relative to that we are basically in the stone age. Relative to cavemen, I guess were pretty advanced though.

How do you feel about the option for girls to go on birth control when they're under 18?

There are a lot of people who shouldn't breed.. perhaps we can just install this shit on people who don't pass a certain aptitude test and then never give them the code.

So we aren't advanced compared to science fiction?

You know in 500 years when science has advanced in unexpected ways, people will still create since fiction concerning alien technology that still surpasses our own?

By that definition, we'll never be advanced.

No. It should not even be a surgical option to anyone under 18.

May I ask why you think this way? It would be a great way to control teen pregnancy.

I don't think elective surgery of any kind should be performed on a minor.

Plus...condoms aren't just for birth control.

Does that include circumcision?

I am not talking about science fiction. To an astrophysisist the concept of something like worm hole is a plausible idea. You can consider it science fiction if you want, but its something that could happen and in maybe 500 years we will have mastered that idea and be able to use it. All I am saying is that technology is relative to the surrounding circumstances and ideas. Atleast to me. I think we are advanced and we have made incredible leaps, but to me saying we are highly advanced is going too far. Anyways this thread isn't about this. If you want to discuss this more with me PM me or start a thread about it.

Is the OP Paul Holdren?

I say fuck no to forced sterilization. And anyone that supported it should do us all a favor and kill themselves to show that they really do care about the "overpopulation" of the planet. But none of them seem willing to do it to themselves.

Edit: and saying it would lead to less unwanted babies, it will lead to more STDs because people are dumb and would have more unprotected sex because pregnacy wouldn't be an issue.
