Would you stay at a job you hate?

I hate my current job.

I'm currently an Asst. Manager at Blockbuster. I worked this job all 4 years through college. I graduated this past May, expecting to leave my job soon after. I'm living rent free with my parents right now, and only have a couple bills. I have enough in the bank to cover these bills for the next 6-7 months.

I just can't stand retail anymore. This isn't the type of job I expected to be working after obtaining my MIS degree. You can only tolerate customers yelling at you for late fees, forgetting their cards, or not having a particular movie in stock so long.

Should I quit? Or drudge through it until I find a job related to my major (which at this point, seems like it's never going to happen)?

UPDATE: I was contacted about a Systems Support Specialist position at BJs Wholesale Corporate HQ. I had applied for a different position with them, but the lack of experience was a sticking point. They said I would be more suited to this position. The only thing that worries me is being stuck behind a help desk for a few years while not gaining any real, usable experience. What are your thoughts on working at a Help Desk? Should I keep looking?

Keep the income comming and you bank account as high as you can. You will eventually find a better job and all that money will come in handy when you move out.

move

just pack up your crap and go to another city in another state

you got enough $ to get a fresh start and find a job

just go for it, you can make it if you try hard enough

i would look for a job stocking at a cub foods or rainbow, maybe some warehouse job(most have benefits too)

i hate people too and dispise baseball and softball players with a passion now

but you have to make money and if the only way to do that is being at a job you don't like you'll have to drudge through it

Let this be a warning to all you college students. You need to worry about this stuff before you graduate.

For the OP, I would get out of retail ASAP. You're probably going to have to take a job that you think you're overqualified for to make up for the experience that you didn't get in an internship/coop program.

If you have money saved, and you're living at home, you can probably afford to quit and look for a job full-time. Looking for a job while working another job you hate is awful, you have NO motivation or energy.

I know it's tough with IT jobs now, but you gotta keep at it. I personally like my job, but I can remember some other jobs I totally hated, and I would rather make less money doing something I like than being stuck in a job I hate. Point is, look for other jobs you might like, even those not really related to your major, but if you hate retail, there's no point staying in that field.

I want to say: "No I would not stay at a job I hate."

However I have been in a job that I have grown to hate for the last few months so that would be a lie.

Instead I will state that I wouldnt make a career out of a job I hate.

My job currently is just a means to an end. I am in school to be an educator and currently my job sucks because it takes up all of my time. Any time I do have left is for chores and studying. I am burning out quickly. At my current job there is no stimulus. I work on a computer and do almost nothing for hours upon hours a day.

Become an IS auditor. Our company is starting hire IS assurance associates out of college now.

Didn't Blockbuster get rid of late fees?

Anyways I'd keep working, but definitely be trying to get out of your current position by finding something else (another jobs) thats at least somewhat related to your field. It may take a while, but should be worth it in the long run if you can find something you at least don't hate and would give you experience that would help down the road.

It is always easier to find a job while you have one. Then, you are not pressured to take the first job you find. My advice is to look hard for a new job. Don't be too picky though. Gone are the days when you could get a great paying IT job right out of college. You need to get your experience and technical knowledge up while working at a help desk, network or PC tech, etc.

Look hard for that job, but stay where you are now. 🙂

I hate my job and am currently looking for a new one. Although i don't have the choice to quit...i wouldn't be able to afford to.

I don't mind starting at the bottom of the barrel at this point. I just want an entry-level position where I can get on track to move up through a company. I thought at the very least my degree would afford this opportunity. I send out around 3-4 resumes a day, and went to a job placement center, but so far not so good.

for the people that are in college when would you all say they need to start looking for a job?

I'd say senior year, or earlier, but definitely before you graduate. More importantly, though, get an internship while ur at college.
