Would you spend the night in a haunted house?

I've been in one and left when it tried to play with my child. Fuck that.

Van Horn mansion in NY. I didn't believe in that shit until that place. And, I did not know it had a documented "history" before visiting. Just thought it was a historic house.

Curious, not to hijack the thread but what happened?

I have before on a few occasions. You never really think you'll run until you are actually alone at 2 am and hear a bang that is louder than a car crash. Going in a group is the best method. I also had something run up and stop right in front of me, couldn't see it but I could feel the floor vibrate as if someone ran up to me. The other things I experienced is, heard a door shake, tapping on window glass, wood banging or moving type sounds, the sound of what I would say sounded like a handful of markers being dropped onto the floor, a few various odd little sounds that are hard to describe and have heard a voice call out the name royerton or broyerton very loudly and distinctly from an empty hallway and yes that's another one where I and 3 others of us ran and broke a door down to get out . I think that's about it for me. I used to love that stuff but just don't have the ambition to go out and try anymore.
I know my wife said she used to see what appeared to be cat sized, orange eyes in her apartment window and room at times and a co worker mentioned his old house he used to see a shadow cross in front of the TV and into the bathroom at night.

Paranormal stuff exists, I just don't believe they are self aware, conscious entities. Other curious things to note, how come people see ghosts dressed from 1800's onwards but no one ever claims to see an ancient roman ghost or neandrethal ghost or anything like that. Maybe the energy memory dissipates after so long?

Most of what you describe i hear here too where i live. The loud bang is the window setting it self in the window frame from rapid temperature changes. This only happens in the winter during night and rapid temperature changes. And because of the concrete, i hear strange sounds that are created by neighbours living several appartments away. Plumbing noises are also typical because of temperature changes, the pipes expand and contract, making noises in the walls especially with central heating systems. And can only be heard at night when it is really really quiet. And whisper gallery effects...

We did a house tour. The whole place felt heavy. The tour takes you down into the basement. As we got downstairs, "it" came around the side of the tour guide and almost knocked her down. It was the height of kid. I then picked up my 4 year old daughter and left while the rest of my family finished the tour.

When they got out, they said they were in the attic when something kept moving around them. My FIL took a photo of a mirror in the attic and caught an image of some chic.

For whatever reason, I just see a white blob/mist when looking at the photo. I took it to work, didn't say why and a friend asked why I had a picture of a ghost. He then showed me the face and hair of the thing.

I probably would, but I'd want to make sure there are good locks on the doors, and maybe windows, to make sure no homeless squatter joins me for the night. 😱

The Window wasn't the loud bang I described. The window was like if you tapped your finger on it, that particular one was in a place I stayed at. The bang sounded like a boulder dropping on the floor, was in an empty room in an abandoned church far from neighbors at 2 am in the summer in Ohio.
I'm talking about unexplainable things, what you describe are explainable events but without a super long post of detail or you not being there doesn't quite do it.

To be honest, my window sounds like somebody hits it hard with a hammer. It is scary and it has woken me up at night when i slept in the living room. Luckily it is in the living room and not in my bedroom.

Well, maybe this is a plausible explanation for your case :
Maybe a crow dropped a stone from a height. Churches have very high ceilings or maybe it was an open path to the roof. Abandoned churches and abandoned houses attract birds.

I don't believe in ghosts but I heard so many stories that sound really authentic. It would be neat to do it just to see what is up.

I ALMOST ended up staying in this hotel a few months back, but it was full:

I totally want a room below that ball room they speak of.

My guess is that there is actually someone turning up music/sounds up there and this "ghost" thing attracts people to go stay there.

Years ago I remember reading an article in the real estate section of the NY Times about this apartment in the UES that keeps going back on the market at super discounted prices because it is supposedly haunted.

Each time somebody who does not believe in this stuff buys it, convinced it is the deal of a lifetime, and each time it goes back to the market after a few months at an even more discounted price.

I am not a believer myself, but somehow I think I would still stay away from that one...

Na, according to lore (i.e. Hollywood), everyone except one or two people make it out alive. Not playing those odds...

"Would you spend the night in an allegedly haunted house?" Sure. No such thing as an actually haunted house though.

Have you been anywhere with documented paranormal happenings?
Documented?

It's also possible to document the hallucinations of a mental patient. Someone writing down hallucinations doesn't lend them credibility.

I do know that imagination can be quite powerful, even when fully awake. We're prone to a strong placebo effect - homeopathic things that contain no active ingredients can make someone feel better. The color of a pill can change how someone feels when they take it.

And sounds can mimic other things.
My sister was in a new apartment, and at some point, she said it sounded exactly like there was a person just outside her room, walking down the hallway while leaning against the wall, creating a sliding, brushing sound.
She found out then that there was a restricted vent nearby that was making the noise.

I've heard odd noises in this apartment - loud clicks that sound like small footsteps (house settling when the pressure outside changes abruptly), or tapping on a window (old single-pane windows settling when the temperature changes), or kitchen cupboards flying open suddenly (car rammed the opposite side of the building when the driver hit the gas in Reverse, rather than Drive), or a loud thumping beneath the kitchen floor (water hammer effect from a machine the store in the other part of the building used to use).

Thus far, my furniture has not rearranged itself, and no undead spirits have popped in to see me.

Given the sheer number of people who have died on the planet, you'd think that hauntings would be damn common, especially in places like hospitals or nursing homes.

But, given that there placebo effect stuff, I still wouldn't want to stay in a "haunted" house, just because my own damn mind would be busy screwing with itself.

From Wiki: "During renovations roofers witnessed faces in windows of the vacant mansion and saw lights flicker for no reason."
So how much of a house can be renovated before the ghosts aren't stuck there anymore? Could I replace a house a section at a time, until nothing's left of the original, and they'd still be stuck there? Is it the ground itself that retains them? What if I cut the house in half? :hmm:
(And I've yet to hear a good reason why ghosts are described as having hair, clothing, jewelry, or glasses. Is there a purgatory for nonliving substances as well, and they get sent there just because they happened to be sitting on a person at the time of death?)

i wouldn't feel comfortable knowing that some gay ghosts may be staring at my butt all night while i was sleeping.
What about some heterosexual ghosts?

(If you're dead...you know, your options are limited.)

Or what about a female ghost who used to be an abusive police officer? Are you ready for a cavity search from beyond the grave?

Still bullshit. 😉
