according to that site, my watch is 7k - http://www.pacifictime.com/rolex-yachtmaster-steel-platinum-watches.htm
my wife has a matching one (only for ladies)

my MIL got them for us last year for chriastmas (i asked for a fake one, but my MIL is VERY high on pride and would only but the real thing)

my wife has a tag thats worth 15k, her mom got it for her when she graduated college - last we went to see about getting the crown ring replaced (gold is wearing off), they quoted us 1000 bucks (needless to say the gold is still worn off)

i've been tempted MANY times to sell mine and buy a matching fake one for a few hundred bucks (just so the MIL wouldn't know i sold it) - but i know karma would catch up with me

if it was a gift, and from your MIL then I say for god sake man don't sell...the Yachtmaster is a very nice watch, I would love to get one as a gift.

I bought a rolex submariner brand new 2 years ago for $4k....It's the only thing I own that I don't need to upgrade every year, IMO one of the best investments you can make other then investing your money period for 5%-7% but then you aren't sporting a rolex either 🙂......I could sell it and probably get 3500 or so even 2 years later....10 years from now if I take care of it, it'll still be worth 2500......ever have a car like that?

it will be worth more than $2500 in ten years, my father got his in 76 for $700, the year before that they were worth $250..today he can sell the same watch, which looks just as good as new even though he abused it for about $2500-$2700....not a "great" investment considering, but certainly not a bad one either.

I have, many times. And will again.

My Watches

so what is your handle over there?

nice tangente, 656, Mark XV clone (Speedbird), also how is the bracelet on the Dynamic? that was almost my first watch...too bad they discontinued it right when I tried to get one... Also almost bought an O&W but cheaped it out with an 8926 instead. And I cannot tell if that is a 38MM AT or the 41 as your wrist seems a little smaller...I still cannot believe they came out with the 49mm Railmaster manual wind model, but the new chronos seem nice, too bad the subdials are too squished together...

oh well good seeing another one around.

Handle same over at TZ as it is here. Bracelet on Dynamic is not all that great. Especially if you compare it to the bracelet on a Speedmaster or AT.

The AT is 35mm. My wrist is small. 🙂

Sure. Last summer I bought $2300 retail movado. Lucky me I got it for $1100 from their outlet store & spend another $400 for $795 retail watch. Anyway this summer its time for a Rado jubilee. It's retail is $1800 or so but I might end up with $1100 or so. The best part is that I never wear watches, but whenever I do they got to be Top of the line.

no i wouldent even spend 100$ on a watch, theres a clock on my phone and clocks everywhere i ever go no need for one, and 9 times out of 10 someone your with has one and you can just ask them for the time

I might, given the right opportunity. I'm a pretty cheap guy in general, but I tend to be as punctual as I can, and I just see a watch as an extremely important tool. I would like one that emphasizes function over style though.

I bought a $300 Citizen Navihawk a number (~7) years ago and loved it. Then the band broke and I never got around to fixing it. I picked up a $7.50 watch from KMart and had people asking me where I got it from and commenting that it was cool and such. Go figure.

Funny, this very issue is addressed in the second paragraph of a book that should be required reading in school

Sorry Viper, but I know many many affluent individuals who constantly slam that book on many levels....it is ok if you are fine living that type of lifestyle, but IMHO life is far too short to penny pinch at every juncture which is what that book advocates, almost as if the author was anti consumerism to the extreme and with that mentality our capatalist society would fail and hard. Having one or two things that you aspire to own and actually make good on can be healthy as it gives you a release from just working and saving all of your money...I would rather die comfortable and happy than loaded and pissed off 🙂

Furthermore, many outside of this forum seem to feel that the main theme of that book is moderation, the author is not suggesting that you follow every aspect he touches on, but rather if a few hit home then some good could be done for those who are overspenders...

like I said, nice if you can actually be happy living that way and still feel like you enjoyed things, but remember if you followed that book to the letter chances are you're ending up living in a not so nice neighborhood, driving a pretty mundane car, never really going anywhere nice to eat or on vacation, always wearing bargain basement outfits and never owning anything *nice*....etc etc

I would rather hit millionaire status by working my arse off than by being a miser.

They say that people who buy these nice expensive watches either:

1. Are extremely wealthy so something like this is like toilet paper money.
or
2. Feel they have the need for material possessions in an attempt to compensate for either a lack of IQ or a small ....

Which one are you? 😉

well, i'm not rich by any means, but i got some money burning in my pocket. I swore off buying off any more computer hardware. I figure a watch would be a good investment since don't they retain a lot of their value? I'd also hate to hand off to my future son a cheap ass watch 😛

Then just invest the money.

I'd never spend that much on a watch.

couldn't the same be said for those who have ultra high power PC's? nice home audio systems or virtually anything else that is overly expensive and totally un-necessary...maybe it is just that some like nice things and neither of the two examples you gave? just a thought next time you consider spending $400+ on a video card that is outdated in a week.
