YES! You're stuck with your phone for 22 months instead of 10 months (as a matter of policy for getting the $50 price break) unless you beg customer service to give you a break.

I went through this recently (this week, actually). I needed a new phone because after 16 months, my old one was acting up and becomming unreliable. When I called (as usual, a friendly human voice answered immediately), they told me I could get a different phone from "a web site called eBay," but I declined. Then they offered a Nokia something-or-other for $80 with a two year agreement, but I told them I wasn't going to do a two-year agreement ever again, and I needed a flip phone because non-flip phones always make unintentional calls if I forget to lock the key pad. I finally offered the difference between the one year and the two year price for them to roll back my equipment contract so I could buy a new phone without paying full retail price. They accepted, billed my account, and the next day I went in and got a new Moto V60s. Needless to say, I paid the one-year price without hesitation.

I have no problems with Verizon's actual service, and indeed I believe without a doubt that it's the best service for me, but the way they like to stick you with the same phone for 22 months at a time doesn't work for me.

Don't plan on losing your phone.

The insurance has $50 or so deductible and the premium is like $4/month. The exchange isn't exactly over the counter from what I hear. it is done through an indepedent insurance company.

If you don't have insurance and you lose your phone, you get to pay the retail price or get another one for discounted rate at the cost of extending contract on top of your current contract.

I bought a spare phone just for that reason.

My two year plan with Verizon is up in a little bit and I'll probably go with another two year plan with them.
I've never had any problems with their service. The one time I had a problem with my phone (dropped it) they replaced it in an hour.

2. LG 6000 - Heard good things about this one. Can get it for $129 w/2-year contract
3. v60
4. Kyocera slider - Looks cool, not sure about function though.

I would try and go with eBay, but I kind of need a phone replacement right now.

Any comments on either the two year contract or the phone choices?

BTW, I got a V60s for $90 w/1-year service contract (and 10 month equipment contract) on sale. This phone has a speaker-phone, and at $90 for only 1-year, it's a great deal if they have it on sale in your area.

When I first got Verizon service, the V60c was $400, so I got the LG-TM510 instead. A year later, I got the V60i (no speaker phone on that one) for $99.99 after MIR with a 2-year contract, so $90 for an updated version of a phone that originally sold for $400 w/contract is good in my book.

Come to think of it, I've never paid less and and gotten more in a cell phone. (My progression: Sprint TP-120 for $220 --> Sprint TP-2100 for $150 --> Sprint TP-2200 for $180 --> Verizon LG-TM510 for $150 --> Verizon Motorola V60i for $100 --> Verizon Motorola V60s for $90. Yep, this latest one has it all for the least I've ever paid--flip, small size, speaker phone, tri-mode, and excellent Verizon service on a plan that works perfectly for me.)

See if your local stores have the V60s. Bonus if it's on sale like mine was!

Check out howardforums, I see there's some new firmware with speakerphone capibilities for the vx6000.

The vx6000 is HIGHLY moddable. I'm going to get it (if they still have it) when I join up in July with Verizon. They're supposed to be releasing a new LG phone sometime, but if they don't have it when I join, I'll just get it in a year when my contract is up.

I went with two years with my current providor, and while they're pretty nice, I'd have liked to ditch them after a year for a better phone.

Nope. I never had to sign for 2 years to get a free phone. If you had to sign 2 years for a free phone, your authorized reseller is making bank off of you!

And FYI, usually the free phones suck anyway compared to the ones you have to pay for. There's a reason they're free and you shouldn't sign a 2 year contract based on that alone.

I signed up for 2 years with Verizon about a year ago. Still have another year to go. I regret it in that while the service kicks ass, I miss getting the VX6000 at promotional price when I would've been able to renew around this time if I had signed for 1 year.

I need to go in and renegotiate my verizon contract this month.. I'll probably do that this coming week, if I can remember to pin down my husband when he's home and awake both (a rare thing these days) and see if I can't convince him this time that he needs a phone too.. right now we just have 2, for my daughter and I.. son would like one but he's gonna have to get his drivers license before I'm convinced he needs one so.. he'll wait.. I'll go in and re-up for 2 years again next april and take care of that.

they need to give me 2 new phones (3, if I can convince my husband to carry one) (and they should give me 2 anyway, the 2 we have are 2 years old this month) and a few more minutes and I'll gladly sign another 2year contract.. I can't see deciding we don't need cellular service in the next 2 years, and verizon is the only company that provides reliable signal to my house.. I've tried them (and cancelled w/in 3 days) all.. I'm not planning on telling them that, but I'm not likely to switch companies.. 2 year contract is not a problem for me.
