YES! You're stuck with your phone for 22 months instead of 10 months (as a matter of policy for getting the $50 price break) unless you beg customer service to give you a break.
I went through this recently (this week, actually). I needed a new phone because after 16 months, my old one was acting up and becomming unreliable. When I called (as usual, a friendly human voice answered immediately), they told me I could get a different phone from "a web site called eBay," but I declined. Then they offered a Nokia something-or-other for $80 with a two year agreement, but I told them I wasn't going to do a two-year agreement ever again, and I needed a flip phone because non-flip phones always make unintentional calls if I forget to lock the key pad. I finally offered the difference between the one year and the two year price for them to roll back my equipment contract so I could buy a new phone without paying full retail price. They accepted, billed my account, and the next day I went in and got a new Moto V60s. Needless to say, I paid the one-year price without hesitation.
I have no problems with Verizon's actual service, and indeed I believe without a doubt that it's the best service for me, but the way they like to stick you with the same phone for 22 months at a time doesn't work for me.
