Would you rather lose your data or have it stolen?

I've noticed that if you put in the password wrongly too many times on a Blackberry device (this depends on user settings), it automatically deletes all your data.

This got me thinking:

would you rather lose all your data, or just stolen, if the phone, or any other device, such as a computer, or mp3 player, was stolen?

stolen means i have to replace the device = $$
lost means i still have the device.

in some cases, data recovery may be possible as well... so as long as i have the device... im happy.

Most all my data can be replaced, baring a few small things. Honestly the only things that can't really be replaced are chat logs... which I sort of keep due to my bad memory. 😛

My thumbdrive carries all of my passwords on it, stored in simple text files.

Simple text files, stored in a simple Truecrypt volume. 🙂

I'd just be annoyed by the fact that I'd have to assemble the large collection of crap that I usually keep stored on my thumbdrive. It's kind of like when I do a format & reinstall of Windows - then I spend the next few months finding all the little utilities I have installed here and there.

What a total fail of a system. a few tries and then nuke?

i believe crackberries wipe after 10 tries.. and you will be prompted to type the word “blackberry” (no quotes) in order to confirm the wipe.

so... if you cant remember your password and figure out how to get it reset after 10 tries... then.. you deserve to lose all your data.

Piece of advice? DONT make your passwords so freaking hard you cant enter them right.
