If you like the city life, go to UW. The campus is hands down better than UCD. But I graduated from UCD, so I gotta stick with them. :D

I just drove up this weekend to Davis to visit my friends for a birthday party and skiing at Tahoe, and if you're used to farmlands, then maybe you'll like it, but I'm so glad I didn't go to that school. Actually, the 1.5hr distance to Tahoe is the only reason I'd want to go there, aha. Don't know anything about Washington.

yeah, I keep on hearing about how excellent the UCI poly sci is. I even received a letter from the department detailing its greatness. Argg why does this have to be so difficult? They all have their ups and downs but I can't decide which of these is most important for me.

i would rate UCI and UCD the same in terms of general academics, and when i was at UCI I thought it was much nicer than davis, from just driving around in dec. my brother will be going to UCI in the fall.

Graduated from UCI w/ a Poli Sci degree. While I really enjoyed some of my classes (pick the right professors), lets be honest now... academic reputation for that major holds no weight at all. The only thing to really decide on is the atmosphere...

UCI - Bunch of asians who are still in the high school mindset. Commuter school.
UCD - Cows ahoy! Lots of beer also.
Washington - No idea.

I'll be living at a frat in the U district in a few months, and after hanging out up there for the last few years I can tell you that Seattle is a great place. Tons of stuff to do in the city, and tons of places you can take trips out to around the area. Vancouver to the north, mountains to the east, the Puget Sound, etc. I applied to UW myself but was rejected, will be doing the community college route... good luck with your decision, if you choose UW I don't think you'll be disappointed.

And the campus is amazing.. check it out if you haven't

I think this is overlooked with many students when choosing their school.

I remember when I was in highschool I just auto rated UCs that i wanted to go to without really considering what the area/nightlife was.

i went to UCI for one quarter and was so utterly disgusted with the students, professors, campus, town, and an entire freaking county that i got the heck out of dodge after just that first quarter. what a sh!thole. although if you're FOB, drive a riced civic, and think it's cool to "mod" your nokia and give "shout outs" to your "peeps" in your dorm building who are listening to anime music at 110 db (or running AIM at 110 db), then you might fit in just great. orange county < *.

davis is a cow town. by a cow town, i mean it is surrounded by cows. and the cows poop. and cow poop smells bad. and when the cows poop, davis smells like cow poop. all of it. i sh!t you not. (pardon the pun). but if you like that and you like hanging with central valley rednecks and horticulture freaks, you might fit in just great.

i don't know anything about UW, but i'd have a hard time imagining it could be worse than those two.

that said, you have other options, especially if you want to be near your gf. UCSC, SJSU, SSU, CSH, and a number of private schools. all would be closer than davis. don't know anything about their poly sci departments, though.

If thomsbrain is right, then I would definately go to the UW. Like I said it is an awesome place, I just assumed the other two were nice as well.

So you've experienced one quarter of uci. Did you commute or stay on campus?

Davis? Do you have any experience at all or are you just spouting BS? Davis is in no way surrounded by cows, we have a small area where maybe up to 20 cows are housed (all experimental 10K cows) and a stable a little off to the side of the campus. At most, maybe 1/5 of the campus (and thats the majority one of the dorms, Tercero) will smell the shit, and thats on a hot day with the wind blowing in the worse direction possible.

Edit:I lived half an hour from UCI, and about 3/4 of my senior class that went to any UC at all went to UCI, so I had plenty of friends there and have often stayed on campus for a week at a time, so I know the area, and the Orange County/LA area. I currently go to Davis, so I know of both of them very well.

i graduated from the UW in dec... i liked it a lot. haven't ever been to UCI or UCD

but i would just advise you to make your decision based on overall academics, rather than for a particular major.

I'm currently a BME student at UCI and part of what yo usay is slightly funny.

True this campus is heavily asian (something like 50%??), and it was a major shock to me the day i walked on it ;)

But to act like people wth AIM at 110b (that do it to act like they have friends and talk to people...) and their anime music exist on ANY campus...find me a campus where you won't find ricers...geeeeez.

As for shoutouts, i'm guessing you are referring to the newsletter. Geeze dude grow UP! You are the one talking about people being stuck in "highschool mentality" and you are doing just that! Then again by the sound of it you never mixed or talked to anyone...

FOB part is true ;) I've been in classes where a friend speaks english so bad they have a friend come with them and translate eveything...muahaha lets see how far they last once the other friend hits his crazy upper div classes ;)

As for polysci...I have no diea. I know our literary/journalism part is really well (ranking in the top of the country) but poly sci just seems like its a "how amny connections can you make in four years" instead of a "our accalimed program is bla bla bla bla" major. Not saying it isn't difficult, but where it comes from doesn't seem to matter as much.

And I hope ou pick UCI ;)

i lived on campus at UCI, and have continued to visit the area and campus over the last 5 years to visit friends. my friends commuted after their first year, and staying with them and occasionally even sitting in on lectures, i know the commuter drill, too. i still hate it. i still hate 99.99% of the people there. i hate the fvcking garbage-covered pigsty they call a beach and the consumerism-is-culture people. i hate that people can't drive for sh!t, and the BMW's daddy bought them don't seem to help. i hate that it once took me an hour to get from the middle of irvine to the edge of irvine on 405, all because there was a car stalled on the shoulder. i hate the bands that come out of there. i basically hate all of LA (have other friends in other areas, including my best friend in hollywood), but orange county is the worst. i actually get more digusted with it the more times i return to visit. All of SoCal can slide off into the ocean for all I'm concerned.

of course it was my fault for going there, and i only blame myself for not taking the atmosphere into account when choosing a school. i'm sure there's a certain type of person who would love it there, but i'm not one of them. oh, i will say this: the air in irvine is not as bad as other places in the greater LA area. whoopee.

as for davis, again, i have friends who went there and i made 3-4 trips when i was in high school to view the campus, talk to faculty, take tours, check out downtown on a saturday night, check out surrounding towns, etc. i was unimpressed by everything. and having lived in another cow town as a child, i feel qualified to say yes, it smelled like cow crap. it also gets massively hot. davis does have some excellent academic programs, and some that are hard to find elsewhere. but they weren't enough to make it worth it for me.

i currently go to UC Santa Cruz. I could make a nice laundry list of things I hate about it, too, but it is so much better than the others that I consider myself lucky to have ended up there. The beaches are clean (gasp!) and their view includes beautiful cliffs and rock formations instead of Dennis Rodman's helicopter and used condoms. The downtown has bookshops and music stores and theatres and music venues that get pretty big bands (Queens of the Stone Age just played, I think). traffic isn't too bad. most of the faculty are friendly and helpful. the TA's actually speak english (well, mostly), and they actually give a fvck how their students are doing. the air is crystal clear, and the only scent is of the sea. the view from campus is so spectacular that students stop dead in their tracks and just stare. there are wonderful mountain backroads for fun driving. it's only an hour or so to monterey or san francisco. and if you surf (i've never tried it), i hear it's one of the best places around. compared to UCI or UCD, it's a paradise.

literally no one does the AIM thing at my campus. they do smoke weed, but they at least keep the AIM volume down. ;) they also keep their cell phone ringers under much better control during class.

i never read the UCI newsletter. the shoutouts i was referring to was more like all the RA's trying to get their buildings worked into a "we're the best" frenzy and "represent" and give fellow residents "mad propz." they'd actually march us out there to chant sh!t. it was ridiculous. they were a bunch of children doing the college equivilent of running into the kitchen to proudly announce to their mothers, "look, i have a penis!" While i made some close friends, for the most part i didn't want to have anything do with the people around me because they were developmental retards. my friends loved UCI, but i personally feel they were the type that would be happy anywhere (lucky for them!). and my friend's lack of personal growth since that first year makes me wonder about them, too.

like i say, there are people that love UCI, but i'm not one of them.

Thats fine then, as long as you have some personal experience. I still say you're missing out on some of the Davis stuff, and its not that cow-like :).

Yes, Santa Cruz is very nice, I have friends over there too. For some reason, we like sea cliff for all our beach trips.
