If you had the choice of being:

1. Rich (billionaire level), respected, loved by all over the world, but with no close friends and family. Think Bruce Wayne or Kobe Bryant.

or

2. A mediocre nobody, middle class cash flow, but with some close friends and family. Think of a typical regular Joe.

which would you chose?

Oh it most certainly is. I have not voted yet, and as you can see someone would trade family/friends for other non-material things.

No matter what, rich person will always have friends.

This is true

I'll say it is the half-truth. To me, the definition of friendship is ambiguous. What you may consider a buddy, I may consider as nothing more than a business acquaintance and such.

#2, since I assume #1 means no wife, and no option to start a family of your own

I wouldn't say Britney is loved by all over the world. She's not a philanthropist, hero, or role-model. Bruce Wayne is a better example :p

#1 - no doubt in my mind. My greatest desire is to make enough money to get my B school named after me and then set up a mega foundation to fund lots of research in Organization Theory.

I have no real frame of reference for what it's like to be "rich, respected, and loved by all around the world," so I can't really make an accurate comparison.

Yup

I'm not buying your premise.

If you're rich and loved by everyone, it'd be easy to make close friends and get a wife. Not being able to have biological kids is one thing, but you can adopt. Bam: friends, family, money, universally loved. Awesome.

So I'd choose #1, 'cause I think you could easily get everything the #2 option has plus be rich 'n' popular.

Welcome to the Billionaire club? I have to use billionaire after introducing Bruce Wayne as a reference.
