In a Gamestop bargain bin, no less (the had some old PC games for .99, if you can believe that).

I'm always up for epic RPG adventures, and I'm assuming this is a pretty time consuming game. I know I could just play it myself and find out that way, but I don't want to put hours into a game and then decide "this is too old".

Is it solvable by using common sense, or is it one of those games that requires a guide?

Is it the big box version? Those usually sell for quite a bit on ebay. Even the smaller boxed versions sell for a lot.

I've wanted to play the game myself, but it's hard to find a used copy that isn't extremely expensive.

it's awesome! You don't need a guide. It's pretty easy to follow along, you basically just explore and discover things. Now, you might want to read up about what items interact with what other items to make better potions/weapons, etc. That's what I used the guide for, but basically it's just a nice turn based RPG. But you can find everything you need online for the game.

my current party consists of only 3 members..it's challenging, but more xp for everyone. Granted it's been about a year since I fired it up, but I played regularly for a long time. I love the wizardry franchise, used to play proving grounds of the mad overlord waaaaaay back

Dude! Wiz 8 is a classic, one of my all time favs.

I will try to use Baldurs Gate as an analogy to this game in terms of 'wow this game looks dated' but the layers of strategy and charcter creation possibilities are endless.

Wiz 8 has some annoyances ( like waiting for the AIs turn in big battles ) - there used to be a mod for that tho.

The game offers up a challenge for sure just in the fights. there are some real tough phases in the game - wandering hordes of critters is somewhat random - and can really f you up and piss you off and don't save. other fights you just plow through. thankfully though I remember most fights were a good balance.

There is a lot to the game too much to mention in this post. You don't need a guide how ever - this one is nore old school and tougher puzzels than your average variety.

for that cheap, why not even if you hate it after 2 hours.

and where else can you create a fairy ninja with a brooklyn accent.

I got to the end of that game but quit before finishing it. It was just too brutal/painful to play back when it was released. The game world is fairly tiny but the pace battles go (and that you get stuck in) it makes the game feel bigger than what it is. Be warned that the game has a memory leak, it will crash after a certain amount of time, and get slower and slower as you go. So make sure you save and reboot a lot.

However, there are a few interesting aspects of the game, and the beginning is not bad. All I vaguely remember is some town that had robots, a tree town in the trees, and some demon looking guys at the end (where I quit)...

This game is definitely a little out there. You realize pretty quick that it isn't your typical high fantasy Might and Magic style game. It took me a fairly long time to complete the game due to exploring everything, completing all subquests, etc. I also remember it being a bit on the hard side, especially at the beginning when your casters are still pretty weak.

Getting an urge to dust this game off and give it another go...

These replies make me pretty happy I found it. I'm going to give it a shot when I have some free time.

It's the small box version. Walking into gamestop was pretty surreal; I felt like I was walking into a game store like 5 years ago (or more). There was a a big bin with PC games in the middle of the store.

Mostly old titles like Dungeon Seige, Sudden Strike, TRON 2.0 etc. And some newer ones like Viva Pinata and Psychonauts. Most of them I own already.

I have to assume they had an old box of PC games in back for years and finally decided to get rid of it. Why else the 99 cent prices on some games?

I remember playing this game and at one point using a trainer, then when I got past the difficult part, I stopped using the trainer. I got to the very end of the game and I couldn't get around a certain glitch. I emailed Sir-Tech and a very polite and helpful Linda Currie told me that the trainer caused the glitch. I never touched the game again, which is sad because it was excellent. If I ever find it for the right price (like on GOG or something) I would totally play it again.

It was a fun game. It had balance problems near the end but they were minor. It is one of the few games I played multiple times (5? 6?). The biggest problem imho was that the game is virtually unmodable so after a while it gets a bit old. Yes there are mods that folks have done by hacking the binary but they are crude at best. I truly wished there had been a wiz 9 by the same folks as a lot of care went into the game to add humor and uniqueness but the company is kaput the and the development team scattered.

The first play through takes a long time. Be sure to make a balance team with a solid front line. You do get to pick two npc along the way...
