Here is the latest notice to all users at the top of the board:

"Folks, and folkettes (both of you) we were the victims of a serious forum breach early this morning, possibly from aliens, we're not sure.
Our field hospitals are littered with the horribly wounded and the merely annoyed, their blood curdling complaints chilling us all.
We will fight on the beaches, and in the hills and sub-forums, so that our valor or at least our sheer stubbornness will be long cherished and dearly remembered.
For as long as the English language is misused men will say, "This was their finest hour ... sort of.""

When I first read the notice I wondered if the whole thing was just a joke. Then I clicked in but it left me wondering, is this the proper way to announce to the world that our highly technical forum has been hacked.

Instead of a long winded witty write up, one would think that relevant information such as what is being done about the breach, the consequences and precautions user might want to take would have been included in the notice.

Frankly I think the notices should be used to alert users of important development regarding the AT community, not as a platform for some to test their creative writing.

And for the record I found the notice humorous but I don't think it belongs there.

Frankly, I think everyone needs to relax. A bit of levity in the messages is a good thing as far as I am concerned.

Is the forum critical to your job? Are you losing money due to the forums being down? If not, then relax and know they are doing everything they can to get it fixed.

Just my opinion though.

Edit: poll fail

I like them, and I think you put too much importance on these forums. They're just web forums, not a banking database. I honestly don't care that much about what happened other than academic curiosity.

I voted no

professionalism is way overrated

in fact, in some cases i view it as unproductive

im sure we will be given more information as it becomes available

I'm really not sure. It seems like the mod who post the notices don't have all the information, so they're embellishing. If they had all the information, I'd prefer they posted that.

I'll also note that the thread title is at odds with the poll title. The thread title implies that "Yes" is for witty notices, while the poll title says that "Yes" is against them.

Your thread title is misleading with regards to your poll. I meant to vote "yay" for the witty notices, but your poll flipped the question and answers.

They should be whatever the forum admin wants them. It is presumptuous and dickheadedish to think otherwise.

I find the humor funny. Sometimes it's fun to see a bit of fun come out of a stressful (at least for the staff) situation. I work in a very serious IT environment, and it gets old fast to be too serious.

This one was kinda corny but it's not really a big deal. The others were ok. Maybe they should let olds do them. 😛

I don't have a problem with it because I don't care if the forum gets hacked (I'm not stupid enough to keep any personal info here). However the message itself is pretty retarded. "Holy crap something bad happened! Wait, what, you want to know what it was? Fuck you, I'm riffing here."
