I've only picked up hitchhikers on 3 or 4 occasions. Twice, it was to keep them from being killed. One guy was wandering down the center of the right lane on an interstate between 2 and 3 a.m. in heavy fog. I missed hitting him by inches. Gave him a ride home; I'll bet that 2 out of 3 drivers would have hit him in those circumstances. In those exact same circumstances, I'd probably hit him myself 2 out of 3 times; and that doesn't include texting/cell phone talking people. The idiot's wife had left him at a party in the next town over & he was planning on walking home.
Another time, very similar circumstances on a state highway. Idiot was drunk and trying to get to the store (multiple miles away) to buy a pack of cigarettes. I took him to the store & back home. He was also at high risk of being run over.
