No. Because quite regularily, Dell SB has deals where you can get a nicely equipped 4700 with a 19" LCD for around $500.

Now, before you get all uppity and say "oh but Dude That's a Dell, and this is a Super Customized XPC" - keep in mind that you have to convince buyers that being "m4d L3eT" is worth the extra ~$500 on top of a Dell, which they know has a few thousand extra systems to swap in, big fancy service contracts, and legions of supporters.

Edit - My Speiling Is Teh Gudness.

We're selling Dell units in the store as well. The 4700 can come with a 17" FP analog, but they've never advertised a package with a 19" digital FP besides maybe their bianual sale (April and October sales). 😉

PS-
Dell charges $99 S&H for home users ... plus the home users pay an initial $100 more than SB. Home users don't generally get units from SB.

Now how much is it worth? Would you pay $899?

This is assuming that you are in the market for a SFF machine and you are not willing to use your super l337 warez copy of Windows XP. This is going to be in a retail store, I'm not selling this sytem on eBay. I'm not looking to purchase this system for myself.

first off you have to decide who your trying to sell this to. oh and btw i made the same system(almost) for $675.42

the same shuttle system(which is btw a skt 754)
AMD 3400+
NEC3540a
Maxtor 200gb IDE(sata/ide doesn't really matter)
FX5200 gfx card
512mb memory
xp home sp2 oem
$675.42 + 17.80shipping

so there, faster, and cheaper(before shipping)...but anyways

when u ask ppl here if they'll buy a system they only think about gaming, if your targeting a business user gfx card is unimportant, i'd add another 512 to that system and $899 wouldn't be to much more than a similar hp/oem computer(remember this is a sff), but i wouldn't plan on selling to many sff, because most ppl look for price over looks. so the regular desktop would be better.

If you think you can build computers for $500 and sell them for $1000 you are seriously disillusioned🙁. It is one of the most cut throat businesses around, if your extremely lucky and find less than tech savvy customers(suckers) to sell to you might build a box for $600 and sell it for $750

HDD: Hitachi 80GB PATA
GFX: Shuttle integrated (there's a 16x PCI-E slot, however)

$999.

With..
Monitor: 17" Dell Flat Panel (analog)
Mouse/Keyb: Entry-level Logitech combo
Speakers: Altec Lansing 120i
Printer: HP Deskjet 3740
$1299.

Would you pay that?

edit: This is going to be in a retail store near UCLA. College neighborhood, but there's also a load of law firms. I'm wondering if this would be a good every day price for a SFF unit. I suppose I should have specified that in my first post. Our biggest cost is the barebones.

So no, this isn't for me to purchase for personal use. It's an everyday price in a retail store.

edit2: Now is this better?

getting better, with a vid card makes it more appealing for some customers (enthusiasts) out there.

I should revise the question to say, "Do you think this would sell in a retail store?" to avoid confusion ... since people keep thinking I'm selling this on eBay, or I'm purchasing it for myself or something...

Who do you expect to buy the $999 cube system?

College students: they'll ask how it's better than a Dell, since they see TV ads and web ads everywhere for $299 Dell systems that are fairly small and quiet, and for $499 Dell laptops that are smaller, include a built-in display, and are portable.

Lawyers might like it because it's small, but then they'd probably buy a laptop instead too.

College gamers: not a gaming system given the slower intel CPU and really awful motherboard graphics.

Here is a basic question, is there a real market for what you want to sell?

(if not, it wont sell, no matter what the price, especially with these alternatives like notebooks they mentioned)

1. No Windows XP. That's an extra $100.
2. The original configuration is a Shuttle XPC. Even if you don't like SFF's, some people do and you can't compare prices for an ATX MB/case/PSU to a SFF setup. That's apples and oranges.

It's only fair if you use similar parts. However I'd switch from Intel to AMD.
1) MSI RS480M2-IL - Integrated graphics (the dell had it) $86
2) 3000+ Venice $150
3) 2x512MB Corsair ValueSelect $80
4) Cheap SFF case / cheap PSU $75
5) WD 80GB $50
6) BenQ DVD Burner / Floppy $45
---

$471 + $100 for XP = $571.

Should definately outperform your dell.

I'd use better parts, however.

1) ASRock ULI board $68
2) 6600GT $150
2) 3000+ Venice $150
3) 2x512MB Corsair ValueSelect $80
4) Antec Aria with PSU $95
5) WD 80GB $50
6) BenQ DVD Burner / Floppy $45

$635 + $100 for XP = $735.

This should be a midrange gaming machine. If you don't game, change the ASRock board to the MSI RS480 board (integrated graphics) and save yourself about $130, making the total $600.

Much, much better than the hp which you configured.

EDIT!
I should revise the question to say, "Do you think this would sell in a retail store?" to avoid confusion ... since people keep thinking I'm selling this on eBay, or I'm purchasing it for myself or something...
Sorry. I didn't see that.

Dell system for $299? You're makin' stuff up. Laptop for $499 ... now you're just a liar. You're insane...

Your lack of market research is a really bad sign if you are actually planning to open a store.

Look in the Sunday paper *. Go to CNN.com **. Wake up and smell the impending bankruptcy.

* Office Depot has a $549 Compaq laptop and $275 eMachines desktop; Dell has a $549 laptop (was $499 last week) and $299 desktop.

** no Dell ad there today, but Dell.com's own Small Business area has a $499 laptop.

I just sold to member pratz here my other system:

P4 3.4ghz
925x chipset
Gig DDR2 533
Asus 6600GT
Audigy 2 ZS
NEC 3500 DVD RW
80 Gig Diamond 9 7200rpm/8mb cache SATA
Hitachi 48x DVD RW
15 inch KDS Rad-5 LCD

Now this was an exceptionally good deal, *AND* it was for half the price of that system, 500 dollars.

D. I. Y.

Why?

Because I can get a hell of a lot more PC for $1000 than that.

Oh and if you think Dell doesn't have a system for $299 and Laptops for $499, then you REALLY need to wake up. That stuff's been plastered all over television for the past few months.

but you admit Dell sells laptops for $499 and $549 right? and PCs for $299?

That I'm not "makin' stuff up ... just a liar. insane... " ?

Seriously, if you plan to open a store you are competing against $274 PCs and $499 laptops. If you can't accept reality, your business will not stay open very long.

Hey davesimmons,

I remember when a few weeks ago for no reason at all you said that what I was selling was a "out of a white van;" implying that it was phony somehow... well it wasn't and you ought to consider your comments more carefully because as you can verify with member Pratz, (who does have heatware) it was exactly as I specified. He just recieved and is running it.

In other words, keep your mouth shut next time before you falsely accuse someone you don't even know of lying and hurting their effort to sell.

Assuming of course, that you care whether or not you fvck up someone's sale because you decided to be cynical

You mean in this Locked FS/FT post in GH?

Re-read the thread, you were in the wrong not me. I made a sarcastic comment about what was either a price check (against the rules) or spam. I'm glad that you're not a troll though.

Also I did not post in your actual FS/FT thread, only in your wrongly posted GH thread.

No, I wouldn't buy that. That would be a ok deal if it had an x800 xl or 6800 gt in it- so it is overpriced by about $300. I am building a much better system for $950.

I guess it is ok for retail but dell has much better prices.
