Barebone (Case/PSU/Mobo): Shuttle XPC SB83G5
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 3.0GHZ LGA775
RAM: Kingston 1GB DDR400 (PC3200)
HDD: Hitachi 80GB PATA
GFX: Shuttle integrated (there's a 16x PCI-E slot, however)
Optical: Aopen 16X DL DVD Burner
OS: XP HOME
$999.

With..
Monitor: 17" Dell Flat Panel (analog)
Mouse/Keyb: Entry-level Logitech combo
Speakers: Altec Lansing 120i
Printer: HP Deskjet 3740
$1299.

Would this system sell for that much in a retail store?

edit: This is going to be in a retail store near UCLA. College neighborhood, but there's also a load of law firms. I'm wondering if this would be a good every day price for a SFF unit. I suppose I should have specified that in my first post. Our biggest cost is the barebones.

So no, this isn't for me to purchase for personal use. It's an everyday price in a retail store.

edit2: Now is this better?

I hope you are not one of those people that post "would you buy it" or the famous "what do you think of my new build idea"......then later in the thread you say oh well I already bought it anyway.

This machine doesn't look that bad, but the price for it is horrible!!!!!!!

I hope you didn't buy it already, otherwise I hate to say it....one word OWNED!!!

Absolute, total rip-off. A bloody reaming. Look around this forum to get an idea of what other people are doing as they are mostly around that budget.

Now, my question is this: What is the deal breaker? Video card? RAM? What would you want in it in order to pay $899 or $999.

To be worth a grand, it would at LEAST need 1GB of ram and an x800xl/6800gt level video card.

With graphics that weak you might as well get a $299 Dell and use the $600 for an Xbox, a PS2, and 10 "greatest hits" games. Then spend the $100 left over on snacks and beer.

This was 1200 at shopping.hp.com. Granted it doesn't come with the printer, but you probably would do better going with dell or hp.

That's an addional $300 in cost.

I challenge you to build this system for $500. Good luck! :D

lol I did that already, and built one around less than 500 bucks before summer started, and these are the prices 4 months ago. So some stuff raised it's price a little and lowered :Q, and could be cheaper !

I'm trying to remember by memory...ok here we go (like mario style) 1st budget pc right before the upgrades

semrpon 3100+ paris : $113
Biostar NF3-250 sock. 754 : $56
2 x 512 mb Pqi DDR 400 : $76
Rosewill case w/ inlcuded psu: $29.99
Chaintech Nvidia 6600 256 mb agp: $139.99
Maxtor Diamond Plus 9 80 Gb ATA133: $61
Asus Quiet Drive CD/CD-RW: $29.99

Total : 505.97 +/- (before shipping and handling, prices may vary depending on the state)

Trust me, the system is sweet :)

Okay, you missed the part where I said "this system." Not a comparable system. THIS system. You won't be able to do it for less than $620 with the ability to buy in bulk and no rebates. I guarantee you. The barebones alone are $250 on Newegg.

edit: Just took another look at yours. It's not even comparable. In fact, it sucks.

Still overpriced, I would rather have my system which you could build for under $1000.

Its non sense to try to sell overpriced tech to a techy, it does not work. Go to the local nursing home and donate that POS.

Maxtor makes the fastest 7200 RPM drives imo but the most unreliable.

But everyone here would tell a friend not to buy "this system" because it's not a good value.

Not a strong enough graphics card for gaming, and for someone who doesn't game on a PC a much cheaper Dell will work just fine.
