Would you pay $500 for a Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB?

I thought that since everyone was making a big deal about the 5900 Ultra 256MB costing that much, I wanted to see what people had to say about the Radeon costing the same...

I avoid top of the line products simply because there will be something better within a few weeks dropping its price by a lot. If I can afford something that expensive, I'll buy a model or two lower, and save the rest.

Seriously? Are you sure it was the 256MB version? I thought it just shipped today. If so, thats a really hot deal considering thats how much the 128MB version is supposed to cost.

i spent 400.00 for the 9700 pro back in september and if i was in the market for a new one yes but after seeing the benchmarks for the 5900 i might wait and see if it performs as well as the benchmarks and buy it if it does.

yes and no...

if i just ran into $500 (won it or something) and it was the next genreation card (not a refresh of an existing generation) then yes i would

this is only coming after upgrading from a geforce2 mx to a radeon 9700 and realizing that games can look incredably good at 1600x1200 2x/8x

Yeah, but what if he FX5900 is slightly better yet ATI wins again on Image quality? Then what?

And out of my personal preferance...No way! with 400 dollars I'd buy box sets of anime...not a freaking videocard!

My videocards I've purchased:

S3 Virge GX 4 Meg - 50
S3 Savage 4 16 meg - 46
Geforce2 GTS-V 32meg - 48
Geforce4mx420 @ 460 speeds - 45

Total: 189

Heck that is since 1997 and I haven't spent enough money to even add up to the Radeon 9600pro!

So you can say "I own a Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB video card, punk." 😀

Let's see if I can remember my videocard history:
Trident 9750 4MB (back when AGP was new; this was a crappy card) - $75
Matrox m3d (supplemental PCI card for the lousy 9750) - $35
nVidia TNT 16MB (my first "good" videocard) - $75
Intel i740 (sort of to see how good it was; don't remember if this was before or after the TNT) - $50
Various TNT2's - $70 on two of them over time
Geforce2 GTS 64MB (brand new, hot item) - $320
Gefroce2 Pro 64MB - ~$100, can't remember exactly
Geforce4 Ti4200 - $200ish I think
Radeon 9700 Pro - $245.
Man, that's too much.🙂 I might as well put a dollar-bill slot on the front of the computer. It might be cheaper.:Q
That $320 GF2 was a bit much I guess. It was quite a fast card at the time.
