Would you pay $1,500.00 for a domain name?

A friend of mine has a business here in Mexico that the .com domain just became available. Unfortunately it was snatched by BuyDomains.com and listed as one of their premium domains. He just paid $1,500.00 for it. It's not like he really needs it as it's a Mexican business and he has the .com.mx domain; he just wanted the .com domain.

I know people pay lots of money for domains but I just can't see paying that much when regular available domains go for $10.00 - $15.00.

BTW, did I mention I hate companies that buy domains for the sole purpose of reselling them? Reminds me of the $#%%$^% ticket scalpers.

<< I'd pay $1500 for Yahoo.com, eBay.com or maybe Mocrosoft.com >>

What's so special about Mocrosoft.com? 😀😀

BTW, no, I'd never pay that insane amount unless it was www.starwars.com or some of the above. 🙂

<< I wonder what the highest selling domain name was?
buisness.com or something?
>>

WallStreet.com sold for $10 million, as did excite.com when they went under recently.

<< Whats the NAME?

He already purchased it, its not like we can buy it out from under him. So what is it??
>>

oh yeah, the domain is hiddenworlds.com

right now his site is at hiddenworlds.com.mx

this place is great; i go diving there pretty regularly.

depends on how much that business makes. for the domain name in and of itself? i wouldn't pay at all. but if he's losing money because people never get to his site, 1500 might be worth it.

I've always wondered how domain names are started. Like, for this case, that particular domain was suddenly produced and then bought buy another company only to resell it to the public. But where did that company who first bought it, buy it from? Are there creators who make domain names and then sell them away or semothing? I mean, can't I just think of all the possible popular domain names right now and sell them later? Who decides who gets first dibs on the domain name? Very confused. 😕

Anybody can make up any domain name they want within the guidelines for domains. You could have: fbfbfkioinjdfsjb.com if you wanted it and nobody else already has it. In this case, someone already registered the name, I think it was someone in India originally, I can't remember. They dumped it and the bastages, BuyDomains.com, bought it for resale.

So what if I wanted to make a domain name up, one that hasn't been taken yet. I think of a name and then what? How do I go about registering it so that when some joe shmoe on the internet types in www.asdfasdfasdf.com they will come to a site that says something like "Would you like to buy this domain name?".

I sold one for $2000 dollars once..

At the time, I thought it wasn't enough, but now I think I made good on the deal.
