Would you pay $1.00 USD/month to use Facebook?

If you charged for it, the userbase would drop a significant amount, and facebook would die.

And no, I would never pay anything for any part of facebook, and neither would a lot of people.

Just like the movie said, it is cool because its free 😉

They don't need to collect $1/user per month. They can make that selling ads. Their ad platform is just in its infancy.

Not only no way, but I'd love to see it fail.
My family have started communicating every emotion that should be expressed in person or at least by phone. The other family members have become little Gaudi’s, posting the weirdest life saying that they themselves don't come close to following.
Im starting to believe facebook leads to insanity.

Or they can do like Anandtech did in the past. Nerf the speed and charge to have it uncapped. Number one rule of business $$$

It depends. Facebook hit fast with those who used AIM and IM a lot. If you looked at ethnic penetration, it was huge amongst Asians. Given that they really only spread across the top universities first, and I did a search through my high school in the first 5 months when Facebook came out, almost everyone came up Asian. Granted, our graduating class was 65% Asian, but still. I think it had to do with the fact that the only schools that had it then were top ivies and some top public schools. It's quite interesting that the MSN-fested Asia is so heavily invested into Facebook. If you look at the maps showing concentration, there's a huge blotch in southeast Asia.

Anyway, the fact is people then kept using it when features came out like the wall and stuff to keep in touch with friends. I still use it to talk to friends that have graduated. But the fact is many of us went to college when Facebook just came out. We still use it.

Sure you can talk about how Facebook is spreading to everyone and going international. It becomes a whole different thing in the hands of a high schooler. Why the fuck do you facebook when you see your friends the next day in the same goddamn classes? Or adults? It's very different in those hands.

For those in their 20s, it's a part of our lives. I could do without it, but it provides a daily dose of entertainment to login and see what my friends are doing. Most of us live within an hour's drive, but Facebook makes it seem like we're only a knock away. Yeah, I can guarantee plenty of us rely on it. The question is whether we'd pay $1 for it.

For those of you who just think Facebook is retarded, maybe it wasn't really ever built around you anyway. Think of the original target market.

Agreed.

I joined facebook back in October 2004, which was my soph yr of college. I remember using it to check out all the hot girls in my classes (back when you posted your schedule on there). It was centered around the college experience. It has become a part of my daily life and a good form of entertainment.

I find it funny when people complain about how FB is just a bunch of people saying worthless things. If one of my friends on FB posts ridiculous shit or posts too much, I just block it from my news feed or de-friend them. Its not that hard.

No. It is nice to keep in touch with friends but too many morons literally sit down and take the time to write insipid things like, "I had tosted bagel with cream chesse for breakfast. Yum!" I want to reach in and strangle...

You have been on AT since 2004 and you dont understand the concept of 'blocking' someone?

COME ON PEOPLE!

um facebook has 600M active users, which means they visit at least once a month. 1/2 of their active users login every single day.

http://www.facebook.com/press/info.php?statistics

(the number is 600M in the prospectus goldman sachs put out)

I work at another social network and have a lot of friends who work at facebook, their numbers are staggering

Seeing how I know people who have 3 or 4 FB accounts that they switch between every day I bet that 600m is a lot lower. It's still a high number, but nowhere near 600m unique users. Hell my neighbor 3 houses down has made FB pages for their 3 dogs and 2 cats. As if a fucking dog gives a shit about having a FB page lol.

if my friends kept on using it as well.

I find facebook great for keeping in contact that I don't see on a regular basis but who I'm still close enough with that I care about their lives (eg: college friends that live a couple hours away, local friends who are buried under their work/family/kids, etc). it's also nice for sharing pictures and organizing events.

I'm going to a potluck birthday party tomorrow that had a facebook event created for it. people used the wall postings to coordinate who's bringing what and for the hosts to request specific things... that most have saved hours in telephone time or all of us arriving to the party only to discover that no one brought drinks for the teetotalers.

I never understood all the angst about facebook. If you're a parent and your kid wastes their life away, then by all means bitch away at your incompetencies as a parent. For everyone else, if you don't like someone's statuses, requests, etc, just block them or unfriend them. Or just don't log on; no one is putting a gun to your head.

indeed... it seems like 90% of the people who bitch about facebook haven't found the "hide" feature.

I have all games and just about all of my spammy friends hidden from my view.

I actually unfriended someone because he posted an update that he was standing in line outside the apple store waiting for his iPad the night before they went on sale.

Here's a reason I hate it, was on the phone with a friend

"man you would have had fun at my sons Bday party."
"I didn't know about it"
"I posted the details on FB"
"Um, I don't have a FB"
"you don't!?"
"no, how the fuck where people without FB suppose to know about the Bday party?"
"like everyone has a FB account"
"I don't"
". . ."

it's annoying that when I don't show up to an event even after I tell them I don't have a FB. These fuckers still cop an attitude. I tell them pretend FB didn't exist and invite me how you would have 10 years ago if you want me there. Other wise don't be surprise when I'm not at a party I knew nothing about.
