Would you move into a motel for an extra $1,700/month?

For much of my career, I worked out of town and "lived" in motels.

Sometimes, we were required to "double up" with another member of the crew, but (fortunately) not all the time.

Usually, the company picked up the cost of the room and paid us $25/day for meals, so getting an extra $1700/month would be a nice bonus for me.

I can eat pretty cheaply when I'm out of town (most of the time) and would be able to bank at least $1000 of that, probably much more.

Hmm. I stayed in hotels for a few months at a time, and never had much of a problem. If it's a nice hotel, it's little different than an apartment with room service.

$1700/month = $20,400 / year

That would nearly double my salary (grad student), and I'd get the room for free. Hell yes. I lose over $7k / year to rent and live in basically those conditions (with better internet; that's easily fixed though).

You're basically asking me if I'd take a free $28000 for the year. The cost to me is a bad internet connection.

You'd be nuts to leave in my honest opinion. Consider that not only are you paid to live there, but you live there for free. You have to remember to include that in how much you make per month while living there (since rent can be expensive no matter where you are).

The catch is that it has to be this type of room.

The government will always try to make sure you're getting screwed one way or another. Apparently, one of these methods involves enticing contractors to live in shady motels with shared bathrooms, increasing the odds of actually getting raped up the ass.

Yeah, the government will try to screw you over every time you try to live rent-free and get paid for it...

if it were me, I might look in the paper for a room for rent.

at least here in the NE, there's always a couple... mostly people in homes with an extra room looking to make some extra cash. shard bathroom and kitchen, but at least it's not a scuzzy motel and you could probably order whatever internet service you wanted.

There is the WLAN/edge/3g option for good high speed broadband, and definitely hit up hotel management with some bills to upgrade to a far better room
