21 years ago, he was a lesser tier rich guy known mostly within New York. I didn't watch the show, but IMO The Apprentice is largely responsible for turning DJT into a celebrity. It certainly vastly enhanced the perception of his business acumen beyond reality.
You're underselling it, he was a famous personality throughout the 80s and 90s. Hence his appearance in a Pizza Hut commercial, in Home Alone 2, his appearance (of sorts) in the comic strip Bloom County.
Some people in some circles knew of him. I did in the 1990s, but he was far from an A-lister, which was my point. Within the NYC social scene, yeah he was big shit; but did a typical farmer in Iowa know anything about him? Many of us knew he was a rich real estate guy who bankrupted casinos, but that's about it.
