would you join army if you knew you won't see combat?

Would you get training and possibly a career or profession and other benefits by serving your nation?

I keep thinking that it's cool to fly a combat helicopter for example, or any other specialty training but not having to practice on live targets across the globe.

yes I was really attracted to the warrant officer program but I don't want to be killing people in my helicopter

You think you'd enlist and get to fly a helicopter?? You're going to need at least a bachelors degree and a long-term commitment to fly a combat helicopter and have the background to become a WO to get a shot at flying a non-combat chopper. And even if you do qualify there's no guarantee that you'll even get a shot at pilots school, it's extremely competitive.

How do you draw the distinction between necessary war and un-necessary war?

Why would you expect all the benefits of serving in the armed services without expecting to be called to war if the time came?

I joined the USMC with a guarantee to go to Vietnam as an rifleman in a Marine rifle company.

I told the recruiting Sgt. that if he couldn't guarantee that, I wouldn't enlist...and that they'd have to wait and see if I got drafted.

Needless to say, he thought that was funny, and told me that it would be the easiest guarantee he'd been asked to write. 😀

Would I have served in peacetime? Probably, but that wasn't the case at the time.

I only take orders from my girlfriend, and that's only because she controls the vagina in the relationship (Yes, MA'AM!). I don't take orders from people who aren't offering me a vagina.

So, no.

Not if it's an unnecessary war.

Tell me, please, what is a necessary war?

Personally, politics weren't a factor to my decision to join. I joined during the war in Afghanistan, but not because I had anything against them. I came to the simple conclusion that if I be able to trust that my country, led by more informed people, know what's best.

Maybe as an officer doing something related to engineering, but as an enlisted man? No, probably not. Just not my thing, and I probably wouldn't last five minutes in combat. 😛

If I would join in peacetime, I'd join whenever. Thought about it a few times, but I don't like the idea of someone else controlling my life for 4+ years. I work with alot of Navy officers. I'd have to say that they have it pretty well.

I joined the Air Force after graduating law school. I generally enjoyed it and would recommend it to my son or daughter if he or she were so inclined. The Army . . . not so much.

The reality is that you can never safely join the military planning on not being involved in, well, military action. There is always the chance you'll be deployed.
