I'm pledging a fraternity. It has many social events, but participates in many other events on campus. Perhaps more people would join fraternities if they understood more about them and got rid of their stereotypes, but that probably won't happen. *shrug*

People will always have their misconceptions....or it just might not be for some types.

I, on the other hand, love to get drunk w/ my friends and doing stupid things, and I love meeting tons of girls so the frat was perfect for me.

Sure I got hazed...I had to do tons of disgusting things.

I just see it as me and a bunch of guys pitch in to have parties and get drunk.

I quit a fraternity when they wanted the pledges to do an "Elephant walk" during the so-called hell week. I'm sorry, I don't want to join any club that bad. And the rest of the pledges(except for one other guy) did it.

It was a completely disgusting situation and many years later I am still sure I made the right choice. Pretty funny for them to have the president's "little brother" quit.

I've made many huge posts concerning this already so I'm going to summarize here.

I am in a fraternity... Alpha Tau Omega on the Virginia Tech campus.
We are a social fraternity.
We all get drunk during parties, and enjoy good times and get together at regular intervals.

Yes, I got hazed (get a brother a beer during parties, learn fraternity information AKA studying, do a few tasks that brothers decided for a few weeks)

Do I regret it, no. I love spending time with everyone I know through the frat, and I've had job offers through the alumni that I had to turn down due to joining the Marines that I would not have known about otherwise.

Did I buy my friends, no. Just counting the beer and social events (paid trips to other campuses) I've gotten more monetarily out of the fraternity than I put in. If I put an equal ammount into just buying beer and traveling I would have gotten only half of what I did get through the frat. There are many other things that were paid for that I'm not even counting into the equation. Lets not even think about the networking that I got out of it.

Do I think fraternities are right for everyone? No, not at all. If you find a group of people that you like being with then go for it. If not then don't. The decision is yours.

Are there fraternities that are 100% true to the stereotypes in the movies? Yes. Mine isn't one of them, but there are others on campus that are. Every person has their own agenda as to what they want from greek life. Each fraternity is different in how they handle people/events/hazing/community service/etc. It's up to the individual person to decide what they want. That's the whole point of rush, look at all the frats out there and see if any of them appeal to you.

Wait...how do you pay for the parties you have w/ your friends? Pass the hat? Oh wait...thats the same thing.

Dues arent even that bad. I actually save money living in the house than I do on campus..and since we get our alcohol thru kegs (about 30 a month) I'm saving money on alcohol too.

People take the wrong approach to hazing. Sure its bad and all, but when you get through it you respect what you've earned. I expected to do horribly disgusting things...and sure enough I did, but since I really didnt care anyway it didnt bother me much.

The school I went to it was not necessary to join a frat to have a life, meaning meeting women. But from what I have heard joining a frat is necessary when you go to a school that has more men than women.

I remember I got an interview at Brown University's medical school. It was through a member of my uncle's frat who was on their selection board. Brown definitely would not have known about me without that contact

instead you ended up on ATOT to compensate for that belonging...hahahahahhahahahahahahahhahahahaha

To the OP, ATOT is a bad demographic for such a question.

Definitely the wrong place to ask...

Really, you don't know anything until you've tried it. Go to some rushes and check out the houses on your campus. You might find one you like. I almost did it, but the time investment required to pledge and the hazing thing just turned me off.

Like religion, it's right for some people and it's not right for others.
And for some reason, also like religion, the people that don't get anything out of it are sometimes vocally critical of those that do.

The bottom line is to try it for yourself. If you got to some rushes and find that you think it sucks, then at least you aren't just making your decisions on stereotypes.
