I'm sure everyone has heard both good and bad things about the Greek system. I'm thinking about joining a fraternity, but I'm on the fence. On the one hand, meet lots of people and have parties. On the other hand, a semester of my life is consumed by pledgeship. Surely ATOT can produce a fair and balanced discussion on this topic.

Yeah, if the frat was actually full of decent people, then I'd consider it

I'm in a fraternity, so...yes.

Edit: You're going to hear a lot of negatively biased opinions toward fraternities, just because of the "Animal House" reputation Greeks in general have. On any given large campus, some fraternities will meet this reputation. Others will not. I'm in a dry fraternity, for example. We don't have problems with trying to study, or waking up early in the morning. Ultimately, only you can decide for yourself, and see if you can find a fraternity where you fit in, and where you feel comfortable.

Also, you are going to hear a lot of people calling them glorified drinking clubs, or buying your friends, or whatnot. Again, some fraternities on some campuses may be like this, but obviously not all are. Again, it's up to you to decide whether a fraternity lifestyle fits you or not.

I joined a fraternity my freshman year, and I still hold it to be one of the greatest decisions of my college career. I know some of the friendships I've made will last a lifetime (and yes I have friends from the dorms, too). Again, it all depends on what you feel comfortable with, and you finding a place where you can fit in.

no because you're basically paying for friends. it's a decent way to meet new people if you're completely new to a college and have 0 friends.

Depends.

I joined a service fraternity (APhiO) but never gave more than a passing thought to joining a social fraternity.

Nope. I rather blow my money on beer instead of club dues.

Again, you are going to run into people who have very one-sided opinions of fraternities. Try to get out there and see for yourself, not just take someone's word for it. I will reiterate that not all fraternities are the same. My fraternity doesn't haze; in fact, no fraternity on my campus hazes.

I'm willing to bet there is some hazing going on. There's a rather broad definition of hazing and most, if not all, fraternity-like organizations haze to some extent.

It would entirely depend on the chapter and their status with the university as well as the type of people they attract. The same Fraternity can vary wildy from campus to campus.

Technically, hazing is making a pledge/freshman do something that a brother doesn't have to do. So if by hazing do you mean, the pledges take quizzes every week on various topics that the brothers do not have to (but did have to do when they were pledges), or have special cleaning weeks that the brothers are not required to attend (but did have to attend when they were pledges), then technically, yes, there is hazing going on. But I'm talking about drinking, or physical abuse, or mental abuse.

pledged a fraternity last quarter, took up a lot of my time...also I often had to choose between rugby events and fraternity events if they took place at the same time

I'm lucky I guess, I am a member of FIJI here at Bradley. The house that I joined ended up being the right house for me, which is a little bit of everything. There are guys in the house into theater, engineering, computers, rock climbing, gaming, etc. Academics are a huge focus at my house, and also during rush I got along well with well. I had my heart set on other houses during rush but I learned about the reputations of those houses, which wasn't too good ,so I didn't feel so bad that I didn't get bid back.
EDIT: Also in my house, there is no pressure to drink. There are a few guys in my house that don't drink, and there is no pressure for them to start.

I would have, but my school is a basic commuter campus, and I don't really like being on campus when I could be at home.
