I was just watching the news, and watching all the people helping to go through the rubble, and it occured to me, that I REALLY wanted to help in the effort. They talked about how a lot of them had gone without sleep for the whole ordeal, and I wished I was there, so that I could help. This is weird for me, because I normally am not very proactive. I usually don't feel any sort of desire at all to help, not for the Oklahoma thing, or any other thing that i can remember. If I had the money, they had flights for me to take, I think that I would have a 75% probability that I would go. What about you guys?

I would like to help, but I have no training in fire, medical, or disaster relief. Fact is, I would be more in the way than I could help. Best for me to stay where I am and try to ring up donations for the Red Cross.

i'd be surprised if they didn't... i think canada's pretty trusted by america. and i saw a girl on tv that was helping out... she had a red sweatshirt that said "CANADA" on the front.

I'd help in a second. i'm sure even my meagre first aid, digging or coffee making skills would be of some use.

how much do plane tickets normally cost from seattle to ny?

my college doesn't start for 2 weeks, so i figured i would have enough time.

and they've confirmed that there were no chemical or biological agents right? because that would probably be a strong factor in my decision ;)

Actually, they need help beyond just digging in the rubble... They have people who will tell you what they need to have done... you just need to be there to help, not to dig in the rubble. :)

Actually, I wouldn't want to dig, just find bodies... :( (and body parts)

But I could do crowd control, paperwork, work an information desk, work a call center, be a supply runner, truck driver, etc...

I'm in Dallas, and planes are grounded, or I would already be there... and there money isn't an issue... but the truth is, there are plenty of people in the region who can help. :)

Everybody in their own way is going to help. As for myself I will be making donations to where ever I can and I will be donating blood on a regular basis. I think this country has a lot of conflicts but it pulls itself together in times of a national crisis.

Here are something you can do: Call up your local City Hall and find out if they have an 'emergency contact' list, and if so, get your name on it. Now, i don't know first hand about cities, but I do know of churchs and such that keep a list of individuals and related skills, so they have people to call on in a time of emergency. Make sure your local authorities know you are willing to help in your own area. Call the Red Cross, and if you can't donate blood for health reasons, offer to help staff the donations centers or take calls. Make donations to charitable groups that are sending relief. Too many people at the actual site will make things too crowded, and since the mayor says they have enough, do what you can in your own area to add to the support.

I'd be there the next day if I heard they needed help and it would be an honor to help.

Stay away from the Armed Forces Recruiting Office. That would suck if you joined and then a week later you went back to your non-proactive self.

Go exercise or something? Maybe you just have a lot of energy at the moment.
