Would you have a problem "wiring" a rental home?

Just ask the landlord - chances are unless he is a total dolt that he will gladly let you do it, especially when you point out that you will leave it in place for the next tenant so he can potentially raise the rent since it is prewired for network. 😉 Heck, he may even help contribute to the cost of materials if you ask nicely.

What Mr pickins said. I didn't ask the landlord if I could run my cat5- I just did it. We also ran wire inbetween 2 apts across the complex- burried the wire at night and everything. No one has noticed yet.

woohoo!! burying the cat5 AND connecting 2 different apts? brilliant!

I'd go ahead and wire it. If you have to, go panduit (before you repaint, so you can paint on the panduit too).

Wireless is great and all but it will never beat a wired connection.

This is also another reason I don't want to get married. When I get my own house and I'm setup the way I want, I'll be forced to change it all.

oh yeah! it was awesome for gaming.

I switched to a wireless G card for a PCI Express slot (abit). It eliminated all my lag issues I would get with certain online games.

LOL, I did the same thing in college, though it was houses instead of apartments. We had 13 people splitting one cable modem (which was uncapped at the time, since they were VERY new and we had a small, local provider). Paying $5/month for ridiculously fast, un-metered internet was fantastic.

Especially when you had root on the box acting as the router, and could prioritize your packets accordingly 🙂

I would NEVER do something like that. hehehehehe

Well I started my little project. First part involves running a cable line to what will be the office. A quick trip to Lowes to pick up $20 worth of the appropriate tools, a low voltage old-work box and a spare wall plate got things going. My wife and I measured and cut a hole for the box, and after a little tweaking it fit perfectly, is level and inline with the outlets in the room.

The problems started when I tried to run the cable though. I pulled a line from the living room (it was in an odd spot, and wasn't going to be used any time soon), then went and bored a hole for the line to the office in the attic. First hole was 1 stud too far over. Second hole was spot on. Hard to get a frame of reference up there. But the problem is, it turns out this particular wall is an exterior wall, and hence is insulated. It's damn near impossible to feed the cable down through, let alone know whether I'm even on the right side of the insulation. Going to try a few things this afternoon to get the cable down through. Right now it seems to bunch up about 3 feet down from the ceiling.

Easiest thing woudl be to just go wireless. No real reason for cabling any more.

Other thing woudl be to ask the Lanlord if you can get a discount on rent for doing it since he can use that as a selling point for other renters in the future.

Was just looking at those... might stop at Home Depot on the way home to pick one up.

Except for things like my XBox, or a server... or other things don't aren't natively wireless.

I taped an Ethernet cable on the wall that runs out to my living room from my room (where the modem and my computer are at). It's somewhat inconspicuous... except the part where it goes right across the wall. But it's not a huge deal.

I cannot use wireless because it's simply too slow as I run a Gig-E network.

Not tonight dear:brokenheart:

Maybe I'm missing something here... whats wrong with running long lengths of cables across the house and running the cable under the rugs and/or tacking the cable to the baseboards or ceiling?

You act as if the only option is to route cable through walls... and while that's the ideal option, it's a little overkill for a rented place.

Is it as elegant? No, but it still does the job and you don't have to worry about any problems from your landlord.
