Would you guys rather have a Sony Cyber-shot® DSC-T30/B or a Canon PowerShot SD700 IS?

....or something else?

I'm going abroad for a year and I would like to upgrade from my Canon S50 to something a bit better in quality and a bit smaller in size. These two seem to fit the bill:

Sony Cyber-shot® DSC-T30/B

Canon PowerShot SD700 IS

They both have some sort of feature for image stabilization, which for someone who spent half a year trying to take a million pictures in every basilica and monument in Rome, would have been a blessing. I'm not quite sure which one is better.

The Sony does have 1.2 million more pixels than the Canon, which really pampers my e-dick. but Canon has a 4x optical zoom vs. Sony's 3x.

I really don't understand why Canon went from the S550, with 7MP 1.5 years ago, DOWN to 6MP now.

Anyway, I'm also open to other suggestions for this price range and camera type. These were my two favorites so far. Any suggestions prior to my departure to South Korea in a couple weeks would be much appreciated :)

Ya that would have been the camera I would have gotten if it were a year or so ago. I just don't understand why the IS700 is less MP...

Get the Canon. We have a few of those Sonys and they are utter crap. My old Nikon 800 at 2.11 MP takes better pics.

I have an SD500 (7.1mp, smaller LCD than 550) which I got on boxing day for cheap. Awesome camera, I love it.

Only thing I don't like is 3X zoom isn't enough for taking pictures outdoors (not that the Elph series is meant for this).

I'd rather have 4X zoom and 6MP. 7.1 is way more than enough unless you are printing photos which I don't do. I end up viewing pics at 1280x1024 at home anyway.

Get the Canon.

Though my Digital is Sony, the Canon has shown itself to be outstanding. You buy a digital for features and the Canon for now has more outstanding results.

I've had a Sony, althought not that model, and it wasn't bad. But I guess others' have had not so good experiences with them or better with Cannon.

My current camera (Panasonic) has 6X optical and I must say it is MUCH better than my old Sony's 3X. I used to underestimate this feature, but it really makes a difference in the quality of pics that you get.

The canon by a mile. The lense and zoom being the main factors, also i prefer the canon style menu system ((Canon/Casio)>Sony>Olympus imo) and have had very good experience with canon digitals in the past (took a trip to the bottom of the sea to kill my old Ixus v3 [rest in peace])

this is utter domination. Glad this is so easy :)

So now the question is, do I buy online, or from costco? I know people who buy HDTV's frak out about their return policy or something, but does this apply to camera's also? How long is it?

It's worth asking because if I buy online, it's gonna be around $30-$40 cheaper after Costco taxes me!

Cannon

I just got a new cannon. I really like how small the sony is though. But that little tiny lense and also more noise didn't cut it. I want top notch picture quality.

One more vote for the Canon.

I still use my SD100 I have had for 4 years now and it takes good pictures and is still in good shape. My dad on the other hand is on his third canon, because they all worked great for him. First replacement was a very old S400, which used compact flash and was bulky, but still worked, but he wanted a smaller, newer SD based one. The second replacement was because he dropped the camera about 6 feet onto concrete. He keeps sticking with canon because they are reliable, easy to use and take great pictures.
